The UW-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club sponsors several on-going activities. These include:
- Scholarships - Each year three $500 scholarships are awarded to high school graduates who attend either a
college or a technical school.
- Adopt-a-Highway - Part of the Wisconsin Clean Highways program, our chapter picks up trash on a two-mile
stretch of State Highway 59 outside of Whitewater, 2-3 times a year. Each clean up is followed by just for
fun auction of wrapped up treasures and trash. Proceeds go to Optimist International.
- School-age Optimist Clubs - The UW-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club sponsors two youth chapters - one,
a Junior Optimist Club at the middle school, and the other, an Octagon Club at the Senior High School. We
give financial support to the Jr. Optimist Club and have chaperoned events and activities for each group.
- Nature Park - An area along a local stream is being developed by this club in conjunction with the
Whitewater Park and Recreation Department. We have cleared and planted several areas including a low land
prairie site and are developing a dog-walking path through the woods along side the stream.
- Youth of the Month - Each month during the school year, 2 students from the middle school or high school
are recognized at one of our meetings. Teacher selected, they and their family, as well as the nominating
teacher, are our lunch guests. Students are introduced and also introduce their family members. Each
student receives a commemorative plaque.
- Club Building - The UW-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club has started four new Optimist Clubs in our
area. One of them, the UW-Whitewater Student Optimist Club is now 10 years old - the oldest college student
Optimist Club in the nation.
