UW-WHITEWATER/COMMUNITY OPTIMIST CLUB
Board Meeting Minutes
December 3, 2007
The meeting was called to order by President Tom Hinspater at 4:10 p.m. Present: Tom Hinspater, Frank Bartlett, Kim Adams, Barb Dickens, Kim Simes, and Carol Miller. Absent: Linda Kinson, Kathy Schumacher, and Wes Therrian.
On a Simes/Bartlett motion, the minutes of the last meeting were approved. Frank Bartlett gave the Treasurer’s Report. He indicated that 26 out of 66 members had not yet paid their dues. All are urged to get their payments in. Frank indicated that the club owes $204 in rent for our storeroom in Wellers Hall. Discussion followed on access to the storeroom and missing items from the storeroom. We are still missing 6 tables (purchased specifically for the gyro stand) and two Nesco roasters. A plea has gone out to members to try to locate the items. It was discussed that if anyone needs to borrow something from the storeroom, we should have some type of “checkout” system. It was also determined that there should be an annual cleaning/straightening up of the storeroom. Frank continued on with his report. We had a request to help fund the Black Hawk Girl Scouts. Frank will contact Lori Grady, the local Girl Scout leader, as we have a budget line item of $100 for the local Girl Scouts. Frank announced that World Affairs Seminar will no longer be coming to Whitewater. There was a request to help sponsor some middle school students for their annual World of Science trip to Disney World. On an Adams/Simes motion, it was passed to be taken to the membership for approval of funding $350. Because this is funded annually, it was discussed that the trip should have its own line item. The Treasurer’s Report was approved on a Dickens/Adams motion.
Old Business
- Caroling at Fairhaven will take place on Thursday, December 6. Participants will meet in the lobby at 4:30 p.m.
- Breakfast with Santa is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Discussion focused on the use of the Kiwanis griddles. It may be necessary for our club to purchase our own griddles. Jim Miller was given approval to offer a $500 deposit to the Kiwanis Club to insure the safe return of the griddles.
- Mitten Trees have been distributed in the community. The mittens will be presented during our December 18 meeting.
- Barb Dickens reported that there are several hundred gifts to be purchased or donated for needy children in Whitewater. All members are asked to bring an unwrapped toy that depicts a special interest or unknown fact of yours. Other members will try to “guess” who brought which item. All gifts will then be donated to Toys for Kids. Gifts should be capped at $25.
- Academic Decathlon will be held Friday, January 11, 2008. Therese Kennedy will recruit volunteers.
- Optimist Park – No report
New Business
- SWIS Pledge - $50,000 was pledged by Governor Michael and Fred Dorn, OI Foundation Chair, for the SWIS District 09. Each club is asked to raise funds for the foundation in order to meet this amount. Discussion will follow with the membership.
- Tom Hinspater brought up a possible problem with posting all old newsletters on the web as there may be concern that children’s pictures are out there.
- Our weekly meeting will be held in the UC 259 beginning February 5, 2008.
- Kim Adams brought up a possible “tuition raffle” to be held in conjunction with the new University Center Grand Opening. Seeing tuition is nearly $3,000 a semester, discussion followed on a possible scholarship instead or “partial” funding for tuition. Kim Adams moved that we give $500 toward a partial tuition scholarship at UW-Whitewater for some lucky student during the Grand Opening of the UC. Kim Simes seconded the motion. Motion carried 4-1. Tom will take to the membership.
- Kim Adams gave a brief update of the Student Optimist Club’s activities.
- There was no report on the Optimist Park or Highway Clean Up.
Kim Simes moved that the meeting be adjourned. Frank Bartlett seconded the motion. Meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Miller, Secretary
