Observatory

The Observatory houses astronomical equipment operated by the Department of Physics.

Built in 1987, the $220,000 facility was the first of its kind in the area, housing a computer-controlled 16" reflecting telescope. The telescope rests on a 28" square reinforced concrete pier, extending 14 feet below the telescope base.

The Observatory features:

  • Dark room
  • Reading and analysis areas
  • Storage rooms for smaller telescopes
  • A light-shielded open-air observing platform featuring seven vibration-isolated concrete piers for holding small telescopes and sufficient space to accommodate 20 students working three per telescope.
