UW-Whitewater professor encourages healthy habits through weekly blog

November 25, 2013

GarvinAssess, consider, and educate are the three words of focus for UW-Whitewater Professor Ann Garvin as she helps people find ways to stay healthy.

Garvin has created "Feel Better Little-By-Little," a campaign that provides support for people who need extra motivation to maintain healthy habits.

Through her blog, she wants to inform people on how to feel better about health and educate them on tactics from eating right to thinking right.

"I want to talk more about what's in your way, how are you going to get around it, how are you going to get some support," Garvin said. She is a professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching and teaches courses in nutrition and health topics.

Her yearlong program is intended to help people take charge of their own health benefits and habits.  Principles of her advice are introduced with her three key words:

  • Assess what to do to feel better.
  • Consider what is stopping you or what is in your way.
  • Educate yourself about what you need to know.

"I'm not diagnosing people, I'm not providing treatment. I'm helping educate," Garvin said about her campaign.

She will share information from other schools and health providers and offer links for additional advice. Blog readers may share comments and sign up for messages and more information on nutrition and health.

In her second week's post, Garvin posed this question:  What would you do if you weren't so tired, stressed or over-committed?

She said her core belief is "whatever you are wanting to do in life cannot be done unless you are feeling good."
