I'm with the "banned!" Music Censorship: a burning question

              Tuesday, October 15, 2013
              9:30 - 10:00 am (Before Fahrenheit 451)
In Ray Bradbury's novel, Fahrenheit 451, protagonist Guy Montag is distrubed by the shallowness of his family and friends, and curious about why the reading of books has been outlawed. The real world in which we live is saturated with music, but much of it is heard as background to other activities. What is it like to listen intently to a piece of music, to value it as much as Guy Montage values the few books he is able to obtain? What would our world be like without any music? This presentation will also feature examples of banned and censored music drawn from the history of both classical and popular music.

              musical masters of deception

              Monday, April 7, 2014
              11:15-11:45 (following Pinocchio)
This presentation will explore the inspiring combination of music and dramatic action that is opera. As in the children's opera Pinocchio, well-known operas such as Rossini's Barber of Seville and Mozart's Marriage of Figaro are full of situations where one or more characters are less than truthful. Find out how composers, singers, actors and musicians and engage in musical deception, with often hilarious consequences.
