Fall 2009

Letters Home Residency

(Free, two sessions)

Recommended for Grades 9-12

Griffin's teaching artists are seeking high school U.S. History and/or American Literature teachers and their students for a three day arts residency. Teachers will work with their students in advance to conduct research on letter writing during all of the American wars and facilitate classroom discussion focusing on both universal and personal aspects of letter writing during times of war. On the day before the performance, Griffin's teaching artists will work with students in the classroom on team building with theatrical games and exercises. On the day after the performance, each student will select a letter from their prior research that means something to them. The teaching artists will return to the classroom to work with students to perform an in-classroom oral presentation of their letters. This residency will teach young people that letter writing can convey many things including, hopes and dreams, experiences, fear, love and compassion, and that personal letters are a first-hand written account of our country's history.
