The Giver Study Guide [pdf]

(15 min. pre-show discussion, 1 hour show, 15 min. post-show discussion)

In a dystopian world where all is the same, twelve-year-old Jonas is selected to receive the memories of a far different life. This Literature to Life award winner The Giver by Lois Lowry was adapted in 2009 and marked the first young adult novel on the Literature to Life roster.  Breaking the mold by utilizing two actors, the piece features a performance focused on the relationship between the young Jonah and his mentor, The Giver.  As Jonah trains to become the Receiver of Memories, the buried truth about the world that he was born into becomes hauntingly clear to both Jonah and the audience. This educational program gives students a new form of access to literature by bringing to life the world of books with performances that create an atmosphere of discovery and spark the imagination.
