University Writing Awards

Congratulations to the 2019-2020 Winners of the University Writing Awards!

We invite UW-Whitewater faculty and instructional academic staff members to nominate students for the University-wide awards for outstanding undergraduate student writing. Papers, essays, and other types of written assignments completed by undergraduate students to meet a course requirement will be accepted. Instructors may nominate up to two papers per class section.

Nominations now being accepted for papers from classes offered during Spring, Summer or Fall 2020.  The deadline for submissions will be in March 2021. (exact date to be announced).   

Instructors should submit papers electronically using the web form available at   (login required).

Submissions are accepted in the following categories:



Expository Essays

short analytical or persuasive papers and exams

Research Papers

quantitative or qualitative research papers

Creative Writing

fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, multi-genre pieces

Journalistic Writing

newspaper articles, television or radio copy, investigative reporting

Reflective Writing

personal reflections and responses

Scientific or Technical Writing

field reports, lab reports, manuals

Professional Writing

case studies, lesson plans, business plans, grant proposals, resume letters

Reviews and Critiques

book, media, performance or art exhibit reviews; literary critiques

Marketing Communications

ads, press releases, direct-marketing pieces

Freshman Writing

any writing listed above and written by a freshman


includes multiple author projects
