Professor Susan Messer received her MFA in Drawing from Arizona State University and studied intaglio printmaking at L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She completed an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, she  worked in art transportation, electron microscopy and as a naturalist and outdoor educator in New York.

In her studio research, Susan creates mixed media drawings and handmade books using a combination of charcoal, pastel, pinhole photography and alternative print strategies. These works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions and included in over 30 guest lectures nationally and internationally. Invigorated by travel, Susan has taught studio workshops Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Women's Studio Workshop, Auburn University, Universite Sainte Anne - Nova Scotia, Museo de los Pintores Oaxaquenos, and Beijing Normal University. In addition to her studio practice, Susan has developed collaborative curatorial and studio projects and received awards from the NEA, Artists Space, the Kohler Foundation, Art Jewelry Forum, and the Wisconsin Arts Board in support of these efforts. She has taught drawing and bookmaking at the university for over 20 years.
