Art and Design Scholarships
A detailed email including the requirements and process of the review will be sent to all Department of Art and Design students each year.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Interested students should submit the following by the specificied deadline to artscholarship@uww.edu to be considered for scholarships:
- AAR (Academic Advising Report) in PDF file format.
- Artist Statement (Word doc) Submit a brief artist statement of potential for success in the area of chosen major. (1-2 pages, Times New Roman Font, 12 point).
- Digital Portfolio of 5-7 artworks (Word doc, Letter Size)
- Numbered Image list with the title (Class, Title of project, Size, media, and year completed). (Example: 1. Painting1_Untitled_16x20_Oil_F2019)
- Please place one image under the title per page.
- Each Image (JPEG file format) should not exceed 1000 pixels width either height or width (no bigger than 7 inches width).
- Three-dimensional work may require multiple views. No more than 3 images per project may be submitted for each three-dimensional artwork or multiple-page publication projects. If all work is three-dimensional, then a total of 21 images may be submitted.
Only students returning as full-timestudents (minimum 12 credits each semester) for the next academic year will be considered for scholarships. Students who do not complete and submit applications to the Art and Design office by the deadline will not be allowed to participate in the Scholarship Review. All the faculty in the department will review your work and make recommendations to the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee will then make the final decision and award scholarships. If you receive a scholarship, you will be required to participate in the scheduled college/department scholarship events in the College Scholarship Celebration in the fall.

Amy E Arntson Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is available to Art and Design majors and supports students with a broad area of interest and demonstrated ability in the field of art and design. The ideal candidate combines a commitment to Graphic Design and/or Media Arts and Game Development with a strong interest in a traditional fine arts studio area. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Estimated Amount: $400.00
Beth Blumberg Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is available to Art and Design majors who are either current or continuing Freshman. The scholarship is to encourage students at the beginning of their academic careers and in the early stage of their development as artists. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Estimated Amount: $100.00
The Mark Palmer Gray, Jr. Endowed Art Scholarship
Description: The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support to deserving, talented and promising art students at UW-Whitewater. The candidate(s) may be an accepted freshman at the time of application but must have an intention to declare a major within the Department of Art and Design. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Minimum 2.5 CUM GPA. Estimated Total Amount: $10,000.00
Edna Grinstead
Description: This scholarship is available to Art and Design majors. It is intended to support and encourage students with both artistic talent and commitment to successful academic performance. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Estimated Amount: $1,000.00
Excellence in Printmaking
Description: This scholarship is available to Art and Design majors. Preference is given to students with a demonstrated expertise in the printmaking. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Estimated Amount: $100.00
Mary Weiser Art Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is available to Art and Design majors. It recognizes and awards academic excellence in creative art forms or art history. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Estimated Amount: $100.00
Raymond E & Zenobia R Light Memorial
Description: The selection of the recipient of this scholarship will be based upon the quality of demonstrated performance or achievement as an arts major. Contact department for discipline specific submission requirements. Estimated Amount: $1,000.00
Roberta Avonn Fiskum
Description: This scholarship is available to Art and Design majors who are either BA or BFA with Graphic Design emphasis. Students must demonstrate excellence in the field of Graphic Design through their portfolio. One or multiple scholarships may be awarded in an academic year. The Scholarship amount indicated is an estimate and may fluctuate every year. Estimated Amount: $1,000.00
The Patty Stricker Scholarship
The Stacia Lane Endowed Art Scholarship
Description: This Scholarship shall be awarded to a student with a declared major within the Department of Art and Design. Preference will be given to a student who has completed six (6) credits in painting. The scholarship shall be awarded every year to candidate of junior or senior status with 2.5 CUM GPA. Estimated Total Amount: $1,000.00

Communication Scholarships
There are numerous scholarship opportunities available to students, both through the university, the College of Arts and Communication and the Communication Department. To make life a little easier, all of the university's scholarship applications and requirement listings are available online. The Ben and Maxine Lowell Scholarship
This scholarship was made possible by Bill ’82 M.S. ’83 and Jan Lowell to honor the memory of their parents, Ben and Maxine Lowell. The award will be made to a student who is cognizant of the importance of honoring their mother and/or father or guardian(s) and making them proud throughout their college career.
Communication Department Scholar Endowment
This scholarship was established by Professor Emerita Patricia Townsend. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has been recommended by the Department of Communication and is studying in any program within the department.
Communication Department Ambassadors
This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in any emphasis of communication. These students are selected to serve as the “face” of the UW-Whitewater Department of Communication.
Peter and Katherine Conover Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was made possible by Department of Communication Professor Emeritus Peter Conover and his wife, Katherine. This scholarship is designed for a junior or senior with a declared major in communication/electronic media, broadcast/print/web journalism or media arts and game development.
Fassl Leadership Scholarship
The Fassl Leadership Scholarship has been established to reward the dedicated members of the UW-Whitewater Forensics Team who take on leadership roles and guide their peers. Preference is given to those who are returning executive board members for the UW-Whitewater Forensics Team.
George Hafer Scholarship Fund
Established by Edward Hung ’77 in honor of Professor Emeritus George Hafer, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior with a declared major in journalism.
Richard and Kathy Haven Political Communication Scholarship
This scholarship is given to a communication or journalism student who is actively involved in Whitewater Student Government, UWW-TV, WSUW, PRSSA or Forensics. The award winner must also demonstrate a career interest in public service, reporting on the work of public officials.
Lowell Award for Excellence in Corporate and Health Communication
This scholarship was made possible by Bill ’82 M.S. ’83 and Jan Lowell. Created to support and encourage highly qualified students in the corporate and health communication program, it is awarded to a student in their junior year.
Martino Journalism Scholarship
Established by Sam Martino, retired member of the Department of Communication, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior who is majoring in communication with an emphasis in print journalism and is involved with the campus newspaper, the Royal Purple.
Gunvor Stoos Excellence in Journalism Scholarship
This Scholarship was established through a generous bequeathal from Mrs. Gunvor Stoos, a member of Theta Sigma Phi, an honorary journalism sorority, who served as editor for two publications, including the Wisconsin Agriculture Magazine.
Dr. Patricia A. Townsend Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Professor Emerita Patricia Townsend, a faculty member for 32 years. It is awarded to a student who is majoring in communication.

Music Scholarships
A detailed email including the requirements and process of the review will be sent to all Department of Music students from the Music Scholarship Coordinator. The music department would like to encourage you to apply for the music scholarships. Some are endowed scholarships from generous donors of the department, and others are funded by the Music Mosaics and Gala Concert funds.
You must also provide a minimum of one/maximum of two music faculty references to support your scholarship application. Faculty do not need to write a letter of recommendation, but it is your responsibility to ask them to fill out a recommendation via an internal online survey to which they have been given access. Faculty references must also be submitted to the Music Department Office by the specified deadline. Scholarship applications without supporting faculty references will not be considered.

Stephen Boelter Music Endowment
In honor of Stephen Boelter ’70, his wife, Karen Combs, has set up this scholarship intended to support a music major with ambitions in education and a commitment to service.
The Roger Coppenbarger Woodwind Scholarship
This scholarship was made possible by Larry Osterburg ’64 in honor of Professor Emeritus Roger Coppenbarger. It is awarded to a student who displays exceptional music abilities and is preferably a double reed student.
LaGrange Society Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to piano students in the music department who have demonstrated musical excellence and academic success.
Bushman/Pritchett Scholarship
Established in honor of former UW-Whitewater Professor Franklin Bushman, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior who is pursuing a degree in music.
Chancellor’s Quartet Scholarship
Members of the Department of Music’s string faculty select the members of the Chancellor’s Quartet, UW-Whitewater’s premier student string quartet, based on the students’ chamber music performance ability. The members of the quartet receive scholarships and are mentored by members of the string faculty.
Gieryn Jazz Talent Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Stefan and Jennifer Gieryn to honor and recognize jazz studies at UW-Whitewater.
James and Leita Feay Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship, established by Sheila Feay-Shaw, former Assistant Professor and coordinator of music education, and her husband Steven Shaw, was founded in memory of Sheila’s parents and encourages excellence in music education.
Gala Concert Scholarships
These awards are facilitated through the efforts of students, faculty, family and friends of the Department of Music and are awarded to exemplary music students.
Glenn and Christine Hayes Music Education Scholarship
Carole Scharinger ’56 established this scholarship in honor of Glenn and Christine Hayes, who have provided exceptional musical direction and artistic support to hundreds of UW-Whitewater students, children and community members of all ages during the course of their respective professional careers. This scholarship shall be made to a declared music major within the College, with preference given to instrumental or choral/general music education students who are preparing to teach, direct, advocate and mentor others.
Jo Ann H. Hobbs Endowed Music Scholarship
This award was made possible by friends and family of Jo Ann H. Hobbs, who taught Applied Piano, and Harp and Piano Pedagogy for the Department of Music for 28 years. She demonstrated her love of music regularly on campus as well as in the community as both a solo and ensemble pianist and harpist. This scholarship supports music students pursuing a music degree with a piano emphasis.
Howard G. Inglefield Music Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Howard G. Inglefield, who was a professional musician in addition to his administrative and teaching duties at UW-Whitewater. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in music education or performance within the College of Arts and Communication. Preference is given to double bass players.
Robert L. Jennings Voice Scholarship
Established by Professor Emeritus Robert L. Jennings, who taught in the Department of Music from 1966 to 1992, this award is given to a music major with a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.
Carlene McMonagle Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship was made possible by friends and alumni in honor of Carlene McMonagle, distinguished voice instructor at UW-Whitewater from 1980 to 2005. It is awarded to a student enrolled in an academic program leading to a degree in music with an emphasis in voice.
Dennis Rohrs Band Scholarship Endowment
Established by Professor Emeritus Dennis Rohrs and his wife Margaret ’70, this scholarship was created for students enrolled in an academic program leading to a Bachelor of Music degree in music education with an instrumental emphasis in wind or percussion instruments.
Dr. Robert K. Webb Family Scholarship
This scholarship provides the conductor of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of UW-Whitewater with resources to attract high-quality solo musicians to help balance the instrumentation and high caliber performance of this ensemble.
The Vander Linden Voice Scholarship
This scholarship is given in memory of Annie Vander Linden.
Joyce Ryan Voice Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated by UW-Whitewater emeritae Carlene McMonagle and Jo Ann Hobbs in honor of Joyce Ryan, who served UW-Whitewater for thirty-five years. She taught applied voice and created and/or taught fourteen different music courses, including Literature, Diction, Opera Performance, Theory, and Aural Skills, and served as Coordinator of the Voice Department for over twenty-five years. This scholarship supports students with a declared vocal performance and/or vocal music education major within the Department of Music.
Grace A. Prugger Scholarship
This award is given to a UW-Whitewater Music student who displays outstanding musicianship and accomplishment, participation in department activities, unique personality, and leadership.
Admissions Music Talent Scholarship
The Admissions Musical Talent scholarships are awarded to incoming students through the UW-Whitewater Admissions Office. Preference is given to students who have received high marks in their UW-Whitewater music department audition, success in high school academics, as well as students who are coming to UW-Whitewater from a variety of states and populations.

Theatre and Dance Scholarships
Visit the main UW-Whitewater scholarships website to apply for the majority of awards.
Read all scholarship criteria carefully — some scholarships require you to submit additional materials or fill out a separate application (see two examples below). Scholarship/Award application forms may be picked up in the spring in the Theatre/Dance office and filed with the Theatre/Dance office by the scheduled due date. WYNETT BARNETT THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP
The candidate must have been active in the theatre or dance program and have at least a sophomore standing during the school year the award is made.The recipient must enroll at UW-Whitewater and be active in the theatre or dance program in the year following the award.The scholarship will be made with no consideration as to the sex of the recipient.
Normally, there will be awards given each year, for the following:
- OUTSTANDING ALL AROUND STUDENT based on his/her participation in all areas of the departmental activities. Typical award amount: $1200.00
- OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE as evidenced by the quality of his/her acting in a variety of roles. Typical award amount: $500.00
- OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL ABILITY as evidenced by his/her participation in a variety of technical areas excluding the area of costuming. Typical award amount: $500.00
- OUTSTANDING ABILITY IN THE AREA OF COSTUMING as evidenced by his/her work in this area. Typical award amount: $500.00
- OUTSTANDING ABILITY IN THE AREA OF DANCE as evidenced by his/her performance in this area. Typical award amount: $500.00
THEATRE ALUMNI AWARD
Current freshman who will be continuing at UW-Whitewater. Minimum grade point average of 3.0. Significant participation in activities of the department. Typical award amount: $350.00
MARGO AND SCOTT TRENTADUE SCHOLARSHIP
This award is given to a theatre major on the basis of excellent scholarship and outstanding performance and/or service in their activities.Typical award amount: $650.00
THE FRED SEDERHOLM THEATRE WRITING AWARD
Students may submit materials independently. The award is available to any student registered for a theatre course for credit during the academic year. Any types of revised or finished writing which represents a student's best critical and/or creative writing skill will be considered. Examples might include research papers, essays, expository writing, criticism or original creative writing including play-writing. Students may submit materials independently, or their work might be recommended by a faculty member. Typical award amount: $400.00
FANNIE HICKLIN THEATRE EDUCATION ENDOWED AWARD
The award is intended to be given annually, depending upon the availability of qualified applicants. The applicant must be an upper-division theatre education student (junior/senior standing). An application form must be submitted. Applicants are expected to be well-rounded in the areas that comprise the theatre education major (i.e. performance, technical). The applicant must have a GPA in Theatre of at least 3.0. Typical award amount: $1000. May be divided between two or more recipients
GENE AND ANNE WILSON ENDOWED THEATER SCHOLARSHIP (Separate Application)
The GPA requirement is a 3.25 in theater classes and a 2.75 overall GPA. The recipient shall have distinguished himself or herself both academically and by displaying strong potential for a successful career in theater. The applicant must have demonstrated substantive work in all aspects of theater department production. Preference will be given to theater majors entering their senior year with consideration also given to theater majors entering their junior year. Preference will be given to tech/design students. If no tech/design student qualifies, consideration will be given to all other theater majors. Typical award amount $1500.00-$1800.00. May be awarded to more than one recipient.
UW-WHITEWATER PERFORMING ARTS TRUST FUND
The scholarship will be given to a student with superior achievement with a 3.0 GPA in the Theatre/Dance department and a 2.5 overall GPA. Departmental award given to Theatre/Dance major/minors at end of their sophomore, junior or continuing senior year. A student who has consistently demonstrated superior achievement in any area of the department. Typical award amount: $750.00. May be divided between two or more recipients.
THEATRE/DANCE DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP
Students will be considered for the scholarship if they will be continuing as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior theatre major in the following fall semester.Students applying for the scholarship must submit a completed application that includes:

- A nominating letter of support from a Theatre/Dance Department faculty or staff member,
- A resumé of theatre design and related work,
- Portfolio examples representative of the student's design work, and
- A recent Academic Record (AR) verifying overall GPA.
Overall GPA of 2.75 or higher. (Once this threshold has been met, GPA shall not be a factor in further consideration of applicants.) The following factors shall be considered in evaluating the relative merit of applicants and in making final decision: The chief criterion to be considered in evaluating applicants shall be how much the design work of each applicant illustrates his/her genuine promise as a designer in the theatre. Additional criterion to be considered shall include:the applicant's work ethic in achieving the designs and the applicant's pursuit of excellence in the work and the applicant's positive contribution toward the study and production work of the Theatre/Dance Department.
Any and all design areas in theatre shall receive equal consideration. On a yearly basis, at the adjudicators' discretion, realized work may or may not carry more weight than project designs. No consideration of race, sex, religion or economic need will be used in determining the award. The selection committee shall be the Theatre/Dance Department Design/Technical faculty and staff. Typical award amount: $1200.00
SALLY MARKS SCHOLARSHIP
The recipient(s) must be of junior status and declared their major in programs within the Theatre/Dance Department. The recipient(s) must have maintained an overall 2.70 grade point average while at UW-Whitewater and be enrolled full-time. The recipient(s) must have demonstrated financial need. A preference will be given to students who have been active in on-campus theatre productions as a student. A preference will be given to female students. At least 3 current students who have declared their major may receive the scholarship in any given year. Each recipient shall receive an equal amount, normally between $4000-$6000 each.

The Max Mallory Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of Max Mallory ’15. This scholarship supports students with a declared major in Media Arts and Game Development who have an interest in this career field.
