Internal auditors verify the accuracy of their firms' financial records and check for waste and fraud. Government accountants and auditors examine the records of government agencies and audit private businesses and individuals whose dealings are subject to government regulation. Some accounts teach, work as consultants, or serve on committees of professional organizations. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting. Kindergarten and elementary school teachers play a vital role in the development of children. Teachers introduce children to the basics of mathematics, language, science, and social studies. They try to instill good study habits and an appreciation for learning. Most elementary school teachers instruct a group of children in several areas while providing individual attention as much as possible. Additionally, teachers generally prepare lessons and grade papers, attend faculty meetings, and supervise extracurricular activities after school. As teachers gain experience, they may advance to supervisory, administrative, or specialized positions within the school system. Often, however, these positions require additional training and certification, and the number of positions available is limited.

Biological scientists study all aspects of the structure and function of living organisms and the relationship of animals and plants to each other and to their environment. Although many specialize in some area, such as microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms), all have in common the study of life. Many biological scientists are involved in research and development. Others, in applied research, use this knowledge in activities such as developing new medicines, increasing crop yields, and improving the environment. Still other biological scientists work in management or administration, for example, planning and administering programs for testing foods and drugs and directing activities at zoos and botanical gardens. Some work in technical products. Finally, some biological scientists write for technical publications.

Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, properties, and changes of the substances of nature, including the familiar solids, liquids, and gases of the physical world as well as the less familiar components of all living systems. Chemists research and put to practical use knowledge about all of these substances. Their research has resulted in a tremendous variety of synthetic materials, such as nylon and polyester fabrics, and processes which help save energy and reduce pollution. Research on the chemistry of living things provides the basis for advances in medicine, agriculture, and other areas. The four basic areas of chemistry are organic, inorganic, analytic, and physical. Chemists often specialize in one of these sub-fields. Over 60% of all chemists work in research and development, and about 10% work as marketing or sales representatives, where they sell and provide technical information on chemical products. Chemistry is playing an increasing role in technological advances such as fiber optics and electricity conducing polymers.

Criminology is a social science that attempts to identify and explain patterns of criminal behavior, as well as analyze society's ability to control crime and delinquency. It studies crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system. A criminal justice major uses an interdisciplinary approach that combines legal studies, sociology, political science, psychology, forensic science, public administration, urban studies, and philosophy. In addition, there is a focus on the definitions, causes, and prevention of crime, as well as the treatment and rehabilitation of offenders. A criminal justice major can expect to learn about the legal and correctional systems in the United States, the philosophy of punishment and deterrence of crimes, and the ethical codes of behavior with which to make use of this knowledge.

Economists study the way society uses scarce resources such as land, labor, raw materials, and machinery to provide goods and services. They analyze the results of their research and determine the costs, inflation, unemployment, economic growth, discrimination, business cycles, or tax policy. Some economists are primarily theorists, developing mathematical models to explain the causes of inflation, while others prefer to work with practical applications of economic policy. Because graduates possess keen analytical skills, they are employable in a variety of different fields, including business, government, journalism, law, teaching, research, administration, and banking. There are career opportunities for graduates with International Studies degrees in a wide range of fields. The traditional career choices for International Studies majors were jobs in international organizations, such as the United Nations, and U.S. government jobs, including the US Foreign Service, and positions in the international divisions of many other departments, including Treasury, Commerce, and Agriculture. Non-governmental organizations, such as the International Red Cross, Amnesty International, and Greenpeace were other options, as were research positions in interest groups dealing with international issues and think-tanks in major cities. And, international business majors have been recruiters, although many employees had to spend a period of time at corporate headquarters in training and entry-level jobs before being posted overseas.
Globalization has greatly expanded the range of careers for which International Studies graduates are trained. For example, human resource departments in large institutions in major cities can benefit from the communication skills and appreciation for different world views that International Studies majors develop through their courses. Many businesses that do not have operations overseas have international business activities. While an International Studies education does not fully prepare majors and minors to manage these activities, their foreign language and other communication skills, and knowledge about international issues are valuable assets to employers. The skills and perspectives that International Studies majors bring to their employers are ones that are difficult for employers to provide for through training in traditional business settings.
The opportunities are great now and continue to grow. The challenge for students is to learn about the wide range of opportunities and to take advantage of the flexibility of the major to structure a set of courses that meets their interests and will help them fulfill their career aspirations.

Mathematicians work in one of the oldest and most basic of the sciences. Mathematicians today are engaged in a wide variety of activities, ranging from the creation of new theories to the translation of scientific and managerial problems into mathematical terms. Work in mathematics falls into two broad categories: Theoretical (pure) mathematics and applied mathematics. These two classes are not sharply defined and often overlap. Theoretical mathematicians work on difficult problems without necessarily considering the immediate practical uses of their discoveries. Applied mathematicians use mathematics to develop theories, techniques, and approaches to solve practical problems in business, government, engineering, and the natural and social sciences.
