Leanne League teaches violin and viola at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Leanne was named the 2010 Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin chapter of the American String Teachers Association. She has given master classes and clinics throughout the Midwest at both high schools and universities. Sought after as a performer in many different roles, Leanne is the associate concertmaster of the Madison Symphony, the assistant concertmaster of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and a member of the UW-Whitewater Piano Trio.
Online Junior String Academy
The String Academy faculty believes learning music via a string instrument is stimulating, rewarding and creative. It requires the use of both hemispheres of the brain, which encourages problem solving and spatial reasoning. More importantly, with hard work, the sense of accomplishment children experience makes them feel positive about learning in general. Most importantly, children will experience and communicate the emotion of music. String Academy is available to Pre-K to grade 12.
2020 - 2021 Dates:
- Fall: September - December - closed
- Spring: January - May
Registrations accepted online until 10/20/20 for Fall and 2/20/21 for Spring . We do NOT accept walk up registrations.
Cost Fall and Spring:
- First child - $420
- Second child, same family - $378 each
- Third child or more, same family - $210 each
Allegro Strings: Are violin students in pre-k through grade 2. Parents are required to attend lessons. The curriculum uses materials from Bonnie Greene and Suzuki Book 1.
The teacher will schedule:
- Fall: Twelve 30-minute individual lessons with six additional group lessons or play-outs.
- Spring: Twelve 30-minute individual lessons with six additional group lessons or play-outs.

Vivace Strings: Are violin, viola, cello or bass students grade 3 - 12. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend lessons. The curriculm includes etude, scales, Suzuki repertoire, and supplemental pieces.
The teacher will schedule:
- Fall: Twelve 45-minute individual lessons.
- Spring: Twelve 45-minute individual lessons.
In addition, parents are asked to monitor and supervise home practice sessions for both Allegro Strings and Vivace Strings.
Note: Upon receipt of your child's registration, the coordinator will contact you to set up private lesson times.
School Orchestra Enrollment
Once students reach the grade level of the orchestra program at their school, they must also enroll in the school orchestra. If a student is not a member of the school orchestra, she/he will not be allowed to continue in the UW-Whitewater String Academy. Should a school not provide an orchestra program, then the student may enroll in the UW-Whitewater String Academy.
Missed Lesson
A two-day notice must be given to the teacher if a lesson must be missed. The lesson will then be rescheduled within a week as agreed upon by both teacher and student. If a lesson is missed without prior notice, the lesson may not be rescheduled. We encourage lessons to be made-up immediately so as to maintain a positive learning process. Because of this, lessons cannot be made-up at the end of the semester. Large group lessons cannot not be made-up. All cancellation requests must be submitted to chandles@uww.edu; provide registrant's name and event session.
Received an Award, Sponsorship or Discount?
For those participants who will be receiving a sponsorship to attend this event: Register and use the promo code your sponsor gave you. The sponsorship will be deducted from your invoice. Any remaining balance remains the participant's responsibility. Any cancellations will result in the sponsorship funds being returned to the supporting organization.
Any qualifying discounts given by the event will not be applied after you have paid in full. Be sure to use the promo code at check out to receive your discount. You will be charged if you do not qualify for requested discount at the start of event.

Susan Chandler, Co-Director
Susan Chandler has been a member of the teaching faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater since 2009. She teaches String Pedagogy, String Techniques, multiple Music Education Methods courses and supervises student teachers. She is a Master Level Adjudicator for the Wisconsin Music School Association and a frequent guest clinician with school orchestras throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. Susan retired as Director of Orchestras from the Kettle Moraine School District, where she taught for 23 years leading her orchestras on international tours to England, Iceland, Australia and New Zealand and within the United States to multiple state and regional music conferences.
