October 13, 2011 Minutes

    1. Call to Order. Committee Chairperson, Elizabeth Hachten called the meeting to order at 2:20 P.M. in White Hall 6c.
    2. Roll Call. Present:  Paul Adogamhe; David Cartwright; Eric Compas; Ellen Davis; Paul Gregory; Elizabeth Hachten; Angela Harlan; Jeff Heinrich; Paul House; Emma Kuby; Natalie Lamkin; Elizabeth Olson; Ellie Schemenauer; and Trudi Witonsky. Absent: Jolly Emrey; Debra Heiber; Sarah Hessenauer; Pilar Melero; Maryam Polley; Steve Sahyun; and Alexandra Wiegel.
    3. Approval of the September 29, 2011 Minutes. Olson/Davis moved to approve with a typographical error correction (Melero listed as both present and absent; she was absent).

      The motion passed unanimously.

    4. Announcements.
      1. Hachten announced that Friday, October 21st is the deadline for departments to get the corrected catalog proofs to her.
    5. Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Harlan/Compas moved to approve the following Mathematics and Computer Sciences courses, new major, revisions to existing courses-prerequisite changes, course deletions, and changes to existing majors and minors:
      1. New courses:
        1. COMPSCI 347 Scientific Computing
        2. COMPSCI 451 Topics in Modern Applied Computing
        3. COMPSCI 476 Software Engineering
      2. New majors:
        1. COMPUTER SCIENCE BA/BS
      3. Revisions to existing courses - prerequisite changes:
        1. COMPSCI 222 Intermediate C++
        2. COMPSCI 223 Advanced C++
        3. COMPSCI 271 Assembly Programming

      The motion passed unanimously.

    6. Department of Languages and Literatures. Witonsky/Cartwright moved to approve the following proposals suggesting a friendly amendment to add the word or between each of the prerequisites listed:
      1. New course – ENGLISH 260 – American Environmental Literature

The motion passed unanimously.

  1. Departments of Biological Sciences and Geography/Geology.
      1. Kuby/Gregory moved to approve the creation of the new subject matter prefix ENVSCI.

    The motion passed unanimously.

      1. Schemenauer/Cartwright moved to approve the following new courses with a Cartwright/Schemenauer motion for friendly amendment to add prerequisite language to ENVSCI 400 indicating that course is for those with senior status, Environmental Sciences Majors, or consent of instructor:
        1. ENVSCI 200 – Introduction to Environmental Science
        2. ENVSCI 400 – Environmental Science Capstone.

        The motions passed unanimously.

      2. Schemenauer/Cartwright moved to approve the proposal for a new major, Environmental Science, with a Harlan/Davis motion for friendly amendments to correct various typographical errors and add language at section seven to specify that at least nine credits are needed in courses at either the 300 or 400 level.

    The motions passed unanimously.

  2. The meeting adjourned at 3:20 P.M.
