Thank you for your support and/or interest in our undergraduate field program. Your involvement in the field education program is crucial to our education program and student success. This page includes information and resources for supervising students in the field placement as well as forms and resources for new agencies interested in serving as a field placement.
To serve as a Field Instructor, the individual must work in an agency that is willing to partner with the UW-W Field Program. The individual must possess a bachelors or masters degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited school.
Field Instructors provide supervision to undergraduate social work students in the field. In this capacity, Field Instructors provide opportunities for students to apply the knowledge, values, and skills learned within the educational program, as well as opportunities to engage in a variety of social work roles and experiences. A detailed explanation of the Field Instructor role, as well as student and UWW Social Work Department information, can be found in the Department of Social Work Field Program Manual for Students, Field Coordinator, Faculty Field Liaisons, and Field Instructors [PDF].
Field Instructors are required to evaluate social work field student using the UWW Department of Social Work Evaluation of Student Performance Tool [PDF] [Word].
All Field Instructors may attend Department of Social Work sponsored UW-W Continuing Education Programs to earn CEUs at minimal cost.
Emails will be sent by the Academic Department Associate of the Social Work Department in advance of continuing education workshops offered. Field Instructors may also wish to access the UW-W Continuing Education Program site to check for Department of Social Work sponsored events. Inquiries about upcoming Department of Social Work sponsored continuing education workshops may be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
To ensure consistency and student success, all Field Instructors currently supervising field students are emailed Field Instructor Orientation Training materials with the Field Manual at the beginning of each semester.
The goal of the training is to provide an overview of the Field Instructor role. Topics covered include: the role of the Field Instructor, field student, and Faculty Field Liaison; placement logistics, including discussion on liability coverage; review of field evaluation tools and resources provided by the program; overview of the UWW Department of Social Work Mission and goals, and an overview of CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS).
The training is designed for individuals who will provide direct field instruction to students. Reviewing the training materials will be especially helpful for new Field Instructors (i.e., those who have not previously worked with our students). The training will also be helpful to seasoned Field Instructors to ensure they are familiar with the most current policies and practices of the UWW Department of Social Work's Field Program.
Social service agencies that employ bachelors level (BSW) or masters level social workers (MSW) and that are interested in providing undergraduate social work students with field placement opportunities are encouraged to complete the Field Agency Data Form and return it to the Field Coordinator or contact the Field Coordinator directly at email@example.com.
