About the Faculty

Jo Ellen BurkholderJo Ellen Burkholder is an Associate Professor of Women's  Studies and serves as the Program Coordinator for Anthropology. She teaches a wide variety of courses that touch on her research on gender in prehistoric cultures of Latin America. Her current research focuses on the sacred geography of the southern Andes Mountains and the evolution of Pachamama, the Andean "Earth Mother." She is a registered professional archaeologist. Her M.A. comes from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY).

Ellie SchemenauerEllie Schemenauer is an Associate Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at UW-Whitewater. Trained in International Relations, she teaches interdisciplinary courses in the social sciences including Introduction to Women's Studies, Women and Work, Women and Men in Cross-cultural Perspective, Women in International Relations and the general education course, Individual and Society. Her research focuses on gender, security and illicit drug trafficking in the Americas. She also has a research interest in feminist pedagogy. Her Ph.D. comes from Florida International University.

Lauren SmithLauren Smith earned her MFA in creative writing and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa. As a Ph.D. student, her studies focused on feminist and post-colonial literacy theory. She has published two books of literacy non-fiction with the University of Iowa Press, and has numerous poetry and essay publications in literacy journals. She's won the Annie Dillard Award, an Illinois Endowment for the Arts Award and a Wisconsin Arts Board Award for non-fiction. She has served three terms as chair and teaches Women, Race and Ethnicity, Introduction to Women's Studies, Feminist Theories and Advanced Seminar for the Women's and Gender Studies Department.
