David Simmons studied history of religions, Hebrew Bible criticism, literary theory and philosophical hermeneutics at the University of Chicago Divinity School. A member of the International Johann Gottfried Herder Society, his research focuses on Herder’s 18th-century commentaries on Hebrew scripture, particularly Genesis, which anticipated later developments in the interpretation of biblical literature and the comparative study of religion. He teaches Introduction to Western Religions, Critical Issues in Modern Religion, the Bible as Literature, and World of Ideas, where he frequently recites passages of German literature at random.
