Applications for the certificate programs are accepted for admission for the summer or fall semesters, with deadlines of October 1, February 1 and July 1.
Graduate counseling certificate programs are designed for individuals who have a master's degree in Counseling from a CACREP-accredited institution (or equivalent) and are interested in acquiring additional knowledge and skills, and ultimately the necessary credentials, to function effectively in other settings. Additional coursework may be required for persons who are not graduates of CACREP programs. A total of 9 to 18 credits will be required for each certificate program, depending on the background of the individual and the intended emphasis. A one- or two-semester internship may be required to complete a certificate program.
The graduate certificate in addictions counseling is designed for individuals who have a master's degree in Counseling from a CACREP accredited institution (or equivalent). This certificate program provides post-graduate training in the emphasis area of addictions counseling to students who have completed a master's degree in Counseling. If this requirement has not been met, additional course work, or the MS Counseling program, may be required.

Program Objective:
This certificate program would provide graduates with the knowledge base to achieve the Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor level with appropriate supervised experience. Licensed Professional Counselors who complete the certificate program will be eligible for a specialist designation on their professional license allowing them to counsel individuals with substance abuse/dependence diagnoses.
The graduate certificate in clinical mental health counseling is designed for individuals who have a master's degree in Counseling from a CACREP (Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) accredited institution (or equivalent) in an emphasis other than clinical mental health counseling. If this requirement has not been met, additional course work, or the MS Counseling program, may be required.

Students take courses sequentially to address the development of counseling services K-12. The internship will be one or two semesters depending on the needs of the student, as determined by Counselor Education faculty. Students having had a year-long internship in the master's program and having sufficient counseling experience with children will only be required to participate in a one semester Internship. However, some experience in all three areas (elementary, middle, and secondary schools) is required.
