ATTENTION:

The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Trumpet beginning August, 2020.

JOB DETAILS:

This position will:

Teach applied trumpet and perform with the faculty brass quintet. Teach General Education classes: World of the Arts (an interdisciplinary arts class), brass instrument techniques (high brass portion); and direct the trumpet and/or brass ensemble. Participate in departmental activities, with particular emphasis on recruiting and outreach. Other duties are possible according to the qualifications of the successful candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate; ABD considered
  • Accomplished performer with broad performing experience
  • Successful studio teacher with a strong background in trumpet literature and pedagogy
Desired Qualifications:
  • Prior successful college or university teaching experience, including both studio and classroom work
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students
  • Evidence of potential for distinguished performance, creative work, and/or scholarship
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2020; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January, 2021 in advance of their first scheduled review. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary professional responsibilities of this faculty member are to teach applied trumpet, recruit and maintain a quality trumpet studio, and perform with the faculty brass quintet. Other responsibilities include teaching World of the Arts, Brass Instrument Techniques (high brass portion), and conducting the trumpet ensemble and/or brass ensemble. The position requires working closely with other faculty and staff to promote positive relationships with regional high school and community college music programs. In addition, this position will be expected to participate in advising students; engaging in active peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activities; participation in department, college, university, and system-wide service; maintaining office hours; and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; a record of peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activity in the discipline; strong leadership contributions to school, college and university committees and to external professional organizations that serve the broader discipline's communities. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving to student success.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The College of Arts and Communication is comprised of Music, Theatre/Dance, MAGD, Communication, and Art and Design. The Music Department currently has over 170 music majors, 60 minors, and 32 full- or part-time faculty and offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees with emphases in Music Education, Performance, and Theory/Composition. UW-Whitewater is accredited by NASM.
