ATTENTION:

The Department of Special Education in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of cross- categorical special education beginning August 2021. This is a 9-month position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as research, and service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise.

JOB DETAILS:

The successful candidate will be able to teach a range of special education licensure and non-licensure undergraduate and graduate courses. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that results in publications, and contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in special education or a closely related field. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2021; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2022 in advance of their first scheduled review
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting student success, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with diverse populations, and serving as active member of the university community
Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience with online teaching or willingness to learn current and emerging practices in online teaching and learning
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants with expertise in applied behavior analysis, dyslexia, or, intellectual disabilities
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-time teaching responsibilities include courses in our graduate and undergraduate program, and possible supervision of field experiences. An active scholarship agenda is expected. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving to student success.

We offer two graduate emphasis areas and three specialist certificates. All are fully online. The 36-credit cross categorical master’s links to cross categorical teacher licensure grades 1-12. The 36-credit professional development emphasis is non- licensure and includes specialist certificates in applied behavior analysis, autism, and/or transition.
