 The Department of Special Education Online Undergraduate Degree Program at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Coordinator and Lecturer. 

 

JOB DETAILS:

           

The Coordinator/Lecturer of the Extended Campus program is responsible for providing leadership, administrative oversight, and instruction. The position is responsible for all elements of this self-supporting cohort program's operation, from marketing and student recruitment, admission, advising, instruction, staffing, curriculum development and revision, program review, and Department committee work. On campus presence and participation is Department activities is expected.

The Extended Campus Program is designed specifically for non-traditional students who are already working in schools or related fields and are interested in obtaining teacher licensure. These individuals are typically working full time and unable to come to campus. 

Courses will be in 8-week online format in asynchronous online format. One synchronous meeting/semester is recommended per course to help students make connections with faculty and other students.  The tentative schedule could be:  class 1 meets online from 9-10, break from 10-10:30, meet with advisor/program coordinator from 10:30-11; class 2 meeting 11-12.

Students will be admitted to UWW in all semesters with SPECED4U cohorts admitted to professional education to start in fall semesters. Cohorts have the opportunity to finish the program coursework in four semesters and two summers with a fifth semester of student teaching.  Some students will have additional coursework to complete General Education and PI34 requirements and will start the cohort when general education requirements are fulfilled. These students will complete one semester to two years as a UWW online student prior to beginning cohort courses. Admission requirements to SPECED4U will include: 1. An associate’s degree from an approved accredited college or 2. General education requirements completed at UWW or accredited institution; 3. A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or appropriate ACT/SAT/CORE scores; 4. 350 documented hours (paid or volunteer) working with children in educational settings under the guidance of a licensed teacher.

SPECED4U regular semester courses will typically be seven to eight weeks with students taking four to six courses each semester.  Summer courses will generally be three-week courses; students will take between one and three courses each summer.  The final fall semester will be directed teaching and will include placement in a school by the program coordinator in collaboration with the Department Student Teaching Coordinator.  Adjunct supervisors will be hired for in person observations and some distance observations (using video technology). 

The Extended Campus Coordinator will provide innovative and entrepreneurial leadership in expanding this self-supporting program. Students in this program are advised individually about which courses are needed and best options for completing a Bachelor in Special Education with recommendation for Cross Categorical K-12 teaching license in Wisconsin. It is

anticipated that the program will continue and further adapt as necessary to accommodate a working-adult-friendly schedule. As indicated in the description below, the Coordinator is actively involved in recruiting students and faculty, and coordinating with participants’ employing school districts for professional placement experiences in Wisconsin and beyond (dependent on where online students are living/working)..

The Extended Campus program is multidisciplinary in nature and is housed in the College of Education and Professional Studies. The Coordinator reports to the Director of Adult Learning in the Graduate Studies and Continuing Education (50%) and the Special Education Chair within the College of Education and Professional Studies (50%).

Program Coordination one course release Fall and one course release Spring Semester. Additional Instructional load includes 4 courses in Fall and 3 courses in Spring Semester. Summer coordination for additional pay. Summer instructional opportunities for additional pay may be available.

   Program is launched Fall 2019 with the first SPECED4U cohort

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:     

  

  • A Ph.D., ED.D, or MA/MS degree in Special Education or closely related field preferred; a Master’s Degree in Special Education or closely related field required. 
  • At least four years teaching experience required; some administrative experience preferred.

  • Ability to interact respectfully and work collaboratively with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including students, parents, staff, and faculty.

·         Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

           

The activities of the Extended Campus Coordinator are classified into five categories: Instruction, Student Advising, Course and Program Management, Marketing, and Other Services.

 

Instruction (60%)

·  Teach Special Education courses and/or supervise student teachers for SPECED4U or the Department of Special Education for each semester Fall (4 course equivalents) and Spring (3 course equivalents)].

·  Coordinate instruction with the Department of Special Education ensuring consistency of content and expectations.

 

Advising Students (15%)

·  Coordinate with COEPS advisor to develop individual plans prior to application regarding what courses may transfer and courses which should be completed prior to admission to SPECED4U, including general education and Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensure courses.

·  Assist students in completing transfer credit agreements as necessary, schedule individual advising meetings each semester.

·  Track enrollment to ensure students are registered for correct courses each semester.

 

Course and Program Management (15%)

·Coordinate course schedules with Special Education chair and plan meeting dates with program Lecturers.

· Submit course schedule to academic departments in the College of Education and Professional Studies.

·Coordinating hiring Lecturers to teach courses in the program with the Department Assistant and Credit Outreach office for extended campus Lecturers and with Department Chairs for overloads or reassignments for full-time faculty.

· Support Lecturers with Canvas course set up, ordering texts, redesigning courses to meet quality benchmarks established by the Department, and other instructional matters.

· Organize meetings for Lecturers to discuss program changes, support in course design, share chosen texts, discuss student concerns.

· Coordinate field and student teaching placements and contact principals and cooperating teachers; train cooperating teachers as necessary.

· Initiate development of Articulation Agreements with Technical Colleges of Wisconsin

· Coordinate student ID creation--including coordinating with the Hawk Card office for Saturday or distance pictures.

· Meet with Adult Student Coordinator regarding student training on: Canvas, email, system storage, WINS, etc.

· Coordinate with ICIT regarding support for connecting to wireless on campus, campus email etc.

· Assist students in developing the necessary study skills for taking online courses, learning to use Canvas, understanding University academic requirements.

 

Marketing Program (15%)

· Respond to email and phone call requests for information about the Extended Campus Program.

· Coordinate marketing with Online Education Outreach Coordinator.

· Design marketing and outreach campaign for schools, centers, conferences, technical colleges, and special education organizations.

· Promote program via phone, email, social media and on-site visits to districts and technical colleges and K-12 schools.

· Coordinate maintaining the SPECED4U Extended Campus web page.

·  Track data of phone calls and contacts to send updates and reminders to begin applying during the following spring for summer enrollment. Follow up with potential program participants.
