ATTENTION:

 

The Race and Ethnic Studies Program in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, seeks a tenure track Assistant Professor beginning August 2023 whose research and teaching interests are in African American or Latina/x/o Studies. Humanities, social science, and/or interdisciplinary approaches are preferred. Housed within the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, Race and Ethnic Studies (RES) is a growing program with a 40-year history at UW-Whitewater.

 

JOB DETAILS:

 

 The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Race and Ethnic Studies, the Capstone in Race and Ethnic Studies, courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as other courses to support the program. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications, and contributes to advancing the program, department, university, profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in relevant field. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2023; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2024 in advance of their first scheduled review.
  • Substantial training within the field of Race and Ethnic Studies, African American Studies or Latina/x/o Studies within social sciences or the humanities, and a commitment to interdisciplinary, intersectional, and decolonial approaches to knowledge production.

Desired Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in and a commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, a commitment to working with diverse populations, and a commitment to service as an active member of the university community.
  • The successful candidate will have the potential to eventually become the coordinator of this program.
  • The preferred candidate will demonstrate potential to take on leadership positions in the program. Experience teaching in an online and/or hybrid format is favored.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

Full-time teaching responsibilities include a 4/4 load and could include the following courses in rotation: Introduction to Race and Ethnic Studies, Capstone in Race and Ethnic Studies, courses in African American or Latina/x/o Studies depending on the specialty of the candidate, and other courses to support the program. Research expectations include peer reviewed publications or other creative activity. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in at least one of the following high-impact teaching practices: undergraduate research, travel study, service learning, and/or internships. Service responsibilities include committee service at the program, department, college, and university levels, as well as participation in community and professional organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or teach courses in the evenings.

 

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

 

The Race and Ethnic Studies Program at UW-Whitewater is one of the oldest Race and Ethnic Studies programs in the Midwest. Similarly, UW-Whitewater’s African American and Chicano Studies programs have existed since the 1970s. The RES minor has been in existence since then and it was restructured in 2016. In addition, in 2016 new minors in African American Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian/Asian American Studies, and Latina/x/o Studies were created. Race and Ethnic Studies (https://www.uww.edu/cls/race-and-ethnic-studies) is comprised of dedicated faculty and academic staff, with core and affiliated members from programs across the university. The program offers five minors and, with Women’s and Gender Studies, co-sponsors the Diversity Leadership Certificate.
