ATTENTION:
The Division of Student Diversity, Engagement & Success seeks a Director, Educational Support Services (Director, King/Chavez & Postsecondary Engagement Programs)
JOB DETAILS:
General administration, innovation, and growth of all aspects of the following programs: African American Network, Southeast Asian Student Services, Native American Support Services, King/Chavez Scholars Program, Lawton Grant and Latino Student Programs. This includes being responsible for: supervision, training and evaluation of staff; program development, fiscal management and development of program budgets; maintenance of a longitudinal database of students served; maintenance of appropriate records of participants’ activities and eligibility; coordinating college engagement activities; oversight of preparation and submittal of federal and state annual program reports and proposals for grants.
This position requires extensive contact with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus and community, students, and in some cases, parents. The position entails fostering and developing relationships with personnel across campus and in the community including: admissions, student affairs, academic advising, campus organizations, as well as principals, counselors, teachers, and other appropriate K-12 personnel; professional organizations, community-based groups, student groups, and agencies interested in promoting the concept of equal educational opportunity. This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Student Diversity, Engagement and Success (SDES) within Academic Affairs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree or equivalent
- Five years’ experience in TRIO or academic support programs in higher education, non-profit entity, or public education.
- Experience with writing, securing, and/or facilitating federal, state, and/or private grants.
- Experience in providing support for the administration and management of programs serving first generation, diverse and economically disadvantaged (M/D) students.
- Life experiences similar to students to be served, research skills, and understanding of university structure.
- A strong record of accomplishment of implementing new programs and new programmatic strategies, with robust outcomes (in quality, academic outcomes, growth, and revenue).
- Demonstrated history in creating innovative programmatic strategies and successful implementation and collaborations.
- Experience handling, prioritizing and executing multiple projects accurately and provide high-quality results while maintaining a high level of customer service, professionalism, and team morale in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities.
- Familiarity with the following TRIO and other higher education programs: Student Support Services, Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science, Summer and Pre-College programs, First Year and Transfer-Student programming, International Student Affairs and Study Abroad, Admissions and Financial Aid, and/or Access- and First-Generation Programming.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team under tight timelines and changing priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and organizational skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to perform non-routine work with changing priorities and collaborating parties.
- Excellent judgment and decisiveness, high integrity, enthusiasm, diplomacy, and tact.
- A collaborative leader who engages and empowers an organized team of event planning and programming professionals, fostering a strong, cohesive team environment.
- Demonstrated competency in budget management.
A. Postsecondary Engagement Programs Oversight (30%)
- Provide oversight to the entire PEP portfolio (e.g. AAN, NASS, SASS, LSP, King/Chavez, Lawton Grant, etc.), including the oversight of related SDES events (e.g., Multicultural Student Orientation, MLK Commemorative Event, Grow Your Own Initiative, Heritage Lecture Series)
- Independently oversee the day-to-day management of the portfolio of programs
- Allocate staff and financial resources based on defined programmatic and growth trajectory
- Define programmatic goals and ensure their proper implementation, autonomously and in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders, within broadly defined strategic goals for the Office of Student Diversity, Engagement and Success and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
- Manage stakeholder relationships internal and external to the University
- Oversee all program directors, coordinators, student employees, and curricula for the portfolio of PEP programs
- Responsibly manage program funds, complete program evaluations and use evaluation data for program improvement.
- Propose and design innovative strategies for these programs that carry out the strategic aims of the University, and the strategic vision of SDES and the UWW, in collaboration with the other programs in SDES
- Provide extensive high-level support in program development and strategic decision-making to the AVC, SDES and UWW as needed across all non-curricular functions of the unit
- Research national and international trends, prepare executive summaries and policy/whitepapers as needed, make strategic recommendations for existing and new programs
- Research, write, and propose policy, protocols, and guidance for new and existing programs within the unit, both autonomously and in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders
- Serve as the primary advisor for new program growth within the unit
- Direct, design, plan, and administer engagement and enrichment activities for KC scholars including programs to assist retention and graduation of first generation and URM students: internships, presentations at conferences; student leadership positions; undergraduate research; study abroad and domestic student exchange
- Coordinate academic, career, and social advising to targeted M/D students throughout their first year of college, and beyond: 50-75 freshman students, 100-150 upper class students.
- Planning and implementing Summer Transition Orientation Program for incoming first year K/C scholars.
- Supervise faculty instructor for K/C first year seminars (Developmental Ed 50/60) in Fall/Spring semesters as well as coordinator for the King/Chavez Learning Community.
- Connect students with sources of financial aid, including campus scholarships and the Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant, etc.
- Oversee the recruitment and scholarship disbursal process of the K/C program in collaboration with Admissions and Financial Aid.
- Represent the university and/or the division on System-wide or community-based committees as assigned by the AVC.
- Participate on divisional and university committees and task forces, including university governance processes, as assigned, nominated, and/or elected.
- Prepare reports to track program development and contributions to System and University strategic goals.
- Adjust work schedule to include occasional weekends and evenings, as well as travel in order to fulfill professional obligations of overseeing program delivery and events
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
