The department of Student Diversity, Engagement and Success at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks an Assistant Vice Chancellor.

JOB DETAILS:

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Diversity, Engagement, and Success (SDES) serves as a senior level campus administrator with primary responsibility for overseeing an office that provides programs that enhance, engage and support students for success in their academic trajectory. SDES programs encompass curricular and co-curricular experiences that champion student diversity, engagement, educational achievement and success. The AVC-SDES position will have responsibility for programs that provide enhanced academic support for all students and especially students from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. SDES serves as the home for the coordination of many of the University’s High-Impact Practices (HIPs). All of the programs in this office are intended to foster improved academic outcomes, student engagement, graduation and success.

This position serves to create synergies between and among multiple programs in ways that will maximize and expand opportunities for students to engage in high-impact educational practices that contribute to realizing academic potential. The AVC-SDES will also be responsible for facilitating and/or engaging in collaborative relationships with the office of the Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer, programs in Enrollment & Retention, First Year Experience, the Academic Advising and Exploration Center, and Continuing Education. The AVC-SDES will also promote, establish and engage in relationships and collaborate with leaders in Student Affairs to promote a holistic approach to serving the unique needs of various student groups. The AVC-SDES will work with faculty and staff in the Race and Ethnic Studies program, Women and Gender Studies Department and other academic programs across all UW-W colleges to address and facilitate inclusive excellence practices that create connections between campus-wide programs that enhance student success. Student outcomes are enhanced by the collaborative efforts in student programming between SDES programs and student organizations throughout the UW-W campus community. The AVC-SDES must facilitate these collaborative efforts to enhance the academic and community-building experiences of all students.

The AVC-SDES will support the coordination, implementation, and assessment of HIPs within the SDES unit and across campus in support of the university’s strategic plan goals and objectives. The AVC-SDES will ensure that SDES programs are contributing to meeting campus strategic goals for improving access and student success, transforming lives and society and promoting diversity and inclusion. The AVC-SDES will also be responsible for developing new programs in support of these goals.

Other programs within this portfolio include the Fund for Wisconsin Scholars, Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant, the Advanced Opportunity Program and the Sophomore & Transfers Exploring Program.

The AVC-SDES reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Five years of higher education leadership experience with responsibilities related to personnel management, budget planning, outcomes assessments, events/programming, and strategic planning
  • Three years of working in the field of multicultural/diversity education and/or High-Impact Practices (HIPs) and/or other student success initiatives
  • Experience working with a variety of university units and programs, for example, cross-unit collaboration with faculty, department chairs, deans, various academic programs as well as programs within student affairs
  • Experience working on campus climate issues, including equity, diversity, and inclusivity within a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to secure external funding to support program goals
  • Demonstrated experience in working across boundaries, both cultural and organizational, to accomplish the requirements of this role
  • Evidence of establishing positive, healthy working relationships with underrepresented students and experience working with diverse populations
  • Outstanding oral communication and writing skills, in particular with respect to grant writing and program reporting
  • Evidence of responsible fiscal management, budget allocation processes, stewardship of resources, and reporting
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Race, Ethnic or Gender Studies or a field related to the responsibilities of this position
Desired Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Higher Education, Race, Ethnic or Gender Studies or a field related to this position
  • Previous successful experience in federal grant-writing

  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Diversity, Engagement and Success:
  1. Develop, maintain and evaluate a strategic plan for Student Diversity, Engagement and Success.
  2. Coordinate, support and promote programs in the assigned portfolio to ensure they are meeting program goals and university strategic priorities.
  3. Evaluate current program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  4. Work collaboratively with leaders in other offices and divisions to promote cross-institution collaborations.
  5. Serve on committees and councils related to enrollment, retention, graduation, and diversity and inclusion.
  6. Build relationships with faculty and staff across the institution to enhance student learning and success, integrate SDES/HIPs programs, and build a positive university climate.
  7. Facilitate intergroup relations between Academic and Student Affairs units relative to SDES programs and support.
  8. Secure grants, contracts and other external funding in support of program activities and initiatives.
  9. Serve on university committees related to diversity, student success and other areas related to student success.
  10. Collaborate with UW-W’s participation in WisCAMP, the National Science Foundation-funded Wisconsin Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in STEM program.
  11. Oversee events and other programs organized/sponsored by SDES, including the Multicultural Heritage Lecture Series and MLK Commemoration; collaborate with other units hosting relevant campus events.
  12. Lead a cross-divisional advisory group of faculty, staff and students to guide program direction and implementation in SDES.
  13. Perform other duties assigned by the Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Administrative:
  1. Oversee SDES strategic planning, driven by research analysis, data management, and student input.
  2. Hire, manage, and supervise personnel; conduct performance evaluations of employees.
  3. Establish and maintain professional development plans for staff.
  4. Make staffing assignments as appropriate from the operations of the offices and programs within the unit.
  5. Monitor the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the federal grant programs.
  6. Improve success of existing programs and seek opportunities for new federal/state funding.
  7. Manage the SDES budget, strategically.
  8. Prepare and monitor program budgets and progress regarding grant-funded projects.
