ATTENTION:

The Department of University Health and Counseling Services at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Registered Nurse.

Reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon needs of the position, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

Provides professional nursing services for the student body. Primary responsibilities include assisting with contact tracing activities and act as resource for campus COVID hotline and clinic calls. This position would participate in testing and follow-up of testing results of students including communication with those students that are in isolation. Utilizing advanced assessment skills and nursing protocols the Student Health Nurse will participate in triage activities at the front desk area. This role will facilitate a campus-wide immunization campaign encouraging students to receive their influenza vaccine as well as other needed vaccines. This position will be a flexible work schedule which may include some evenings.

This appointment is less than 1.0 FTE (40hrs/week) and is benefit-eligible based on number of hours. This appointment is 4-5days/week during the academic year and reduced during breaks and the summer months (Mid-May through Mid-August) . FTE negotiable based on UHCS and candidate needs and will be agreed-upon prior to employment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Unrestricted WI RN license
  • Current CPR
  • One year of ambulatory clinic nursing
  • Experience in Nursing Triage and use of protocols
Desired Qualifications
  • 3 years experience as primary nurse in ambulatory primary care setting providing direct patient care
  • Experience with contact tracing
  • Awareness of issues and requirements related to COVID.

DIRECT PATIENT CARE

The Student Health Nurse will provide direct patient care utilizing nursing assessment skills, by protocol, with support from a licensed provider. The nurse will be communicating with students and providers primarily around COVID and follow-up from testing. This may include, but is not limited to, contact tracing, case management, and communication with local public health.
  1. Interview and conduct physical assessment.
  2. Recognize normal findings from abnormal, and implement the intended protocol based on findings. Follow protocol decision tree.
  3. Provide advice for health care concerns based on health education brochures, electronic evidence-based resources, and standards of care.
  4. When findings are beyond intent of protocol, facilitate patient into provider schedule or consult with provider.
  5. Provide follow-up care as necessary, for example, make sure test results are communicated to patient.
  6. Provide triage services for those patients who telephone or contacts UHCS electronically. Assess patient request for services.
INDIRECT PATIENT CARE

The Student Health Nurse will demonstrate and lead by example with advanced communication skills, problem solving abilities, conflict management and fostering a work environment that follows the principles of civility. Active listening and clarification skills are important with this patient population. Must be accountable for own communication and able to maintain positive relationships with varying types of customers (physicians, nurse practitioners, laboratory technicians, nurses, medical assistants, receptionists, schedulers, parents, student patients and other university employees). Able to resource and problem solve in effective manner. Addresses conflict and resolves issues in a professional and timely manner. Maintain required certifications/competencies, i.e., BLS, immunizations, TB testing, fit testing, etc.
  1. The Student Health Nurse acts as a consultant and resource for the SHC and other campus programs.
  2. Provide information regarding clinic and community resources available to students.
  3. Participate in student programs and events on campus.
  4. Provide evaluative data on the performance of new and/or less experienced staff. Orient new staff to the clinical area.
  5. Completes one quality study annually which demonstrates quality improvement according to the AAAHC standards.
  6. Follows all AAAHC standards. Makes recommendation and implements quality improvement processes.
  7. Participates in Peer Review process.
  8. Proficient with data analysis, assessment, and evaluation
  9. Coordinates and participates in delivering flu clinics and other outreach health services as deemed necessary.
  10. Reviews Nursing Protocols, policies and procedures and updates on an annual basis.
  11. Participate in research studies appropriate to Student Health Center’s population.
  12. Participate in social media, marketing of events and health promoting messages.
  13. Coordinates annual staff education and compliance with Bloodborne pathogens, Infection prevention, immunizations and training for new staff.
  14. The Student Health Nurse is accountable to develop and maintain own program of professional development.
  15. Supports the mission of the university and division of student affairs strategic priorities.
  16. Engages in the University goals for Inclusive Excellence
  17. Proficient with utilization of electronic medical records
