ATTENTION:

The University Marketing and Communications department at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks an Art Director (Sr. Media Specialist, S76BN).

This will be a 100% fixed term annual appointment and reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon needs of the position, university funding and external forces.

Based on experience and qualifications, the salary range for this position is 58,000 to 62,000.

The University of Wisconsin System is engaged in a Title and Total Compensation (TTC) project to redesign job titles and compensation structures. JOB DETAILS:

The Art Director is responsible for overseeing and producing high quality graphics and artwork for the university through the use of digital and graphic arts techniques. The graphic designer must possess advanced knowledge in the areas of computer graphics, typesetting, typography and design, and specialized graphic arts applications including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Animate. Serves as the artistic director and enhances the UW-Whitewater brand through print and multimedia production.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7 years of professional work experience in related position
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of commercial art
  • Knowledge of best practices for graphic design, branding and visual identity
  • Ability to create artwork through use of design tools and imaging
  • Knowledge of postal regulations for printing pieces
  • Experience using graphics software on Apple computers
  • Ability to download software and make hardware upgrades
  • Ability to organize and prepare electronic files for storage and retrieval
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to crop and resize photos and artwork for use in computer graphics
  • Ability to prepare graphics for web-based applications
  • Ability to package print jobs for production
  • Knowledge of the Pantone Matching System
  • Will be an active participant and comply with applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Produce graphics and artwork for University Marketing and Communications:
  1. Provide graphic and design services to faculty, staff and administration
  2. Design and produce university print materials from ideas to completion
  3. Lead the graphic design team, including managing professional staff graphic designers and student designers, to complete a variety of university projects on deadline
  4. Work collaboratively with university clients to meet their graphic design and publication needs
  5. Prepare artwork and text for print by packaging fonts, links and final file and preparing reports
  6. Proof completed work
  7. Retouch and color correct photos electronically
  8. Accept delegated responsibilities as assigned
  9. Project a positive and professional demeanor in the workplace and campus community
  10. Work with Print Services and Administrative Affairs to ensure accuracy and quality in printed materials.
  • Examples of artwork:
    • Enrollment marketing print publications and digital advertisements
    • High profile campus-wide publications
    • Brochures, flyers and newsletters for university offices and departments
    • University letterhead, business cards and envelopes
    • Website graphics and banners
    • Scoreboard concepts for social media animation and slide shows
    • Environmental signage and displays
B. Serve as the artistic director for University Marketing and Communications:
  1. Set expectations and visual quality standards for all print and multimedia production
  2. Work with off-campus contractors for printing and other services
  3. Hire, supervise and mentor student employees
  4. Hire and supervise freelance graphic designers
  5. Maintain and update UW-Whitewater’s visual identity standards as needed
