ATTENTION:

The Department of the Dean of Students in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Student Life Specialist (Case Manager).

Academic staff positions are provided fixed-term appointments with annual renewals unless otherwise noted. Reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon performance, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

The Dean of Students Office at UW-Whitewater seeks a Coordinator for Student Case Management/Student Life specialists to join their team. Reporting to the Dean of Students or Assistant Dean of Students, this position is focused on students’ personal and academic success. Support is provided to and for students experiencing varying levels of concern, including, but not limited to: crises and emergencies, restorative justice, hate/bias, academic challenges, behavioral and physical health concerns, financial concerns, and personal and family issues.
The Student Life Specialist serves within the Student Life Office by advocating on behalf of students when appropriate and necessary. Student advocacy will include engaging, outreaching, and partnering with families, faculty, staff, and other resources. The position will advise, support, and serve as a liaison for students experiencing personal, social, and/or academic difficulties. In addition, they will provide referrals to other campus and community resources. Due to the unique nature of the position, maintaining confidentiality and privacy are essential functions of the job. The Student Life Specialist will need to effectively communicate and build supportive, collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff guided by fairness, accountability, and compassion. Tact and discretion and a professional, service-oriented demeanor are required in conjunction with a clear understanding of the university’s Academic & Non-Academic policies and procedures.


The Student Life Specialist works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and parents to identify and respond to concerns, interpret policies and procedures, make appropriate referrals, and discuss options and consequences of various decisions. As the primary case manager for all students of concern cases, this position specializes in providing critical outreach and follow-up with students who need assistance with university policy, procedures, and processes. This position will support restorative justice initiatives, ombudsman and mediation work, outreach and support, medical withdrawal, and other work focused on student success. The position prepares annual reports and summaries based on documented data. This position supports the mission and goals of the Dean of Students Office and the division of Student Affairs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of professional experience in student development, college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university. 
  • A Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university may substitute the years of experience requirement

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct service to students. Response to referral service, creates and implements action plans, and interacts with clients, families, and community contacts. Collaborates with professionals and other community service bodies provide on-call services, makes referrals, and prepares reports and summaries.

1.     Serves as the primary advocate for students dealing with a crisis or personal needs, struggling with campus policy or procedure, requesting advocacy, and restorative justice.

2.     Assesses needs of students/clients and provides or recommends interdisciplinary care

3.     Creates, implements, coordinates, and monitors treatment plans to assist students/clients in meeting wellness goals

4.     Documents all cases and accurately maintain records of cases discussed

5.     Prepares reports based on documented data

75%   A. Student Life Specialist 

1.     Has a leadership role in the Dean of Students restorative justice initiative. 

2.     Supports students to understand and navigate university policies, processes, and procedures. 

3.     Provide advocacy and ombudsman services to students.

4.     Build relationships with students through focused outreach to marginalized student groups, students’ organizations, and Greek life 

5.     Process medical withdrawals, including paperwork from health care facilities and relaying information to other units and faculty on campus.

6.     Provide communication, support, and assistance to students, families, faculty, and staff regarding extended and excessive student absences and other student concerns.

7.     Counsel with and act as a referral source for students experiencing personal, social, emotional, and academic problems.

8.     Meet with students who are considering medical withdrawals, or basic or routine withdrawals from UW-Whitewater.

9.     Serve as a problem solver/resource person for students and staff with complaints.

10.   Initiate and distribute emergency student absence notifications to appropriate faculty members, advisors, and colleges.

11.   In conjunction with the Dean / Assistant Dean of Students, advocate for the needs of students when appropriate and necessary.

12.   Participate in regular advocacy and staff meetings to ensure coordination

13.   Work and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, family members, and the community to provide guidance and resources for student success.  

14.   Work through difficult situations with tact, patience, and a sense of humor.

15.   Provide training on student rights and responsibilities, student success, and DOS office services to campus partners and students.

16.   Serve as a resource to staff, faculty, employees, community members, students, and parents (current and potential) regarding policies and procedures of the Dean of Students Office, while adhering to all mandated standards of privacy.

20%   B. Administrative Duties    

1.     Assist in maintaining statistics for the University of Wisconsin System reports and annual Dean of Students Office reports

2.     Maintain student notes and provide overall case management in student information systems (e.g., Maxient, Navigate, WINS, etc.).

3.     Participate in regular professional development and university system meetings.

4.     Serve on University, Division, and Department Committees as needed.

5%   C. Division of Student Life      

1.     Advance the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the Division through day-to-day responsibilities and special projects.

2.     Demonstrate a commitment to social justice and inclusive excellence.

3.     Represent the Department or Division via campus committees, initiatives, and events as requested.

4.     Other duties as assigned.
