INTRODUCTION:

The Department of Housing in the Division of Student Affairs at UW-Whitewater is seeking (2) two Custodian Leads, (Custodian Lead, FP020).

This position is responsible for providing custodial lead work for University Housing Facilities. The Custodian Lead guides the work of a crew of Custodian, University Staff Temporary Employees (USTE's) and student workers. The incumbent works under the direction of a Custodial Supervisor. The lead worker assists the Custodial Supervisor in developing custodial objectives designed to meet the needs of building occupants and the tasks required to achieve these objectives.

The Custodian Lead must practice exemplary behavior when working with customers and fellow staff members. The person holding this position must possess a valid driver's license and qualify for state vehicle operation. The position is designated at a Level 1 for risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

JOB DUTIES:

50%   A. Lead the activities of a custodial service crew

  1. Plan and assign work tasks for Custodians, USTE's and student workers.
  2. Conduct monthly housekeeping inspections of University Housing buildings.
  3. Manage inventory and distribute proper cleaning supplies for Custodians and student workers.
  4. Coach Custodians in proper cleaning procedures and methods to correct deviations from established standards.
  5. Train employees in use of equipment and supplies.
  6. Show awareness and alertness in noting, correcting, and consulting with supervisor any practices that waste human or material resources.

30%   B. Perform and/or assist in various housekeeping activities

  1. Clean and sanitize restroom facilities daily.
  2. Sweep and wet mop floors daily and refinish as necessary.
  3. Clean walls, doors, windows, and air vents as needed.
  4. Vacuum carpeting.
  5. Assist in laborer activities (furniture moves, etc.)

15%   C. Assist in maintaining facilities in a safe and orderly condition

  1. Replace light bulbs and clean fixtures when changing bulbs.
  2. Remove snow and ice from immediate area of building.
  3. Police areas adjacent to the buildings for trash.
  4. Maintain all storage and supply areas in an organized and safe manner with all items properly labeled.
  5. Observe and report any building, grounds or equipment maintenance needs.
  6. Assist supervisor in collection and inventory of burned out bulbs/tubes to help facilitate their removal to the designated storage area on campus.

5% D. Perform various administrative duties in absence of Custodial Supervisor

  1. Collect vacation, flex and comp time requests.
  2. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to provide lead work, instruction and administrative support for University Housing Facilities Custodial crew
  • Ability to perform a variety of daily, periodic and seasonal duties
  • Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, staff, and students
  • Independently organize and prioritize work load
  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods
  • Knowledge of cleaning solutions and agents
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment and materials
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to be authorized to drive a state vehicle
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
