INTRODUCTION: 

The Department of UW Rock County Facilities Planning and Management at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Rock County Campus seeks a Custodian Lead (FP020).

 

JOB DUTIES: 

This is a Custodial Lead position on a team with diverse responsibilities as listed below. This position will provide custodial services to maintain the cleanliness of the campus buildings, perform facility set-up and furniture and equipment placements, conduct grounds and outdoor work, monitor fleet vehicles for proper care and maintain their availability for use, conduct routine safety and security checks, and perform building maintenance. Employee performance is monitored by, and the position is directly supervised by, the Director of Facilities.   

Scheduled Shift:  Monday – Friday 12 pm-8:30 pm, and occasional weekend work. Incumbent may work variable shifts with some rotational work on Saturdays and/or Sunday. Summer schedule may vary.

Responsibilities:

65%  Provide custodial lead services on second shift to maintain cleanliness and safety of buildings and grounds     

1. Plan and assign tasks and assist with a cleaning crew performing any or all of the duties below.

2. Scheduling, scrubbing, stripping, waxing and burnishing of hard floors. Carpet and upholstery cleaning.

3. Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, clean and disinfect restrooms, classrooms, offices, labs, study areas and hallways.

4. Restock paper towel, toilet paper, soap and other supplies.

5. Remove waste and recyclables to dumpsters.

6. Clean walls, windows, whiteboards, chalkboards and other special surfaces.

7. Replace lamps and clean fixtures.

8. Train new employees in custodial procedures.

9. Organize work of student employees and timesheet reporting.

10%  Conduct grounds work

1. Prioritize and lead crew in snow and ice removal from entryways and sidewalks using shovels, snow blowers, and salt spreaders. Lead worker is responsible for using skid steer with power broom and plow truck.

2. Perform minor repairs to equipment. Ensure fluids are at adequate levels.

3. Provide lawn care using commercial mowers, weed eaters, pruners, rakes, blowers, irrigation systems and other tools and equipment.

4. Remove litter and debris from lawn, sidewalks and grounds. Empty exterior trash and recycling containers.

10%  Safety and Security            

1. Observe buildings and grounds for safety. Take steps to resolve unsafe conditions and report areas needing additional attention to supervisor.

2. Ensure rooms and buildings are locked as scheduled. Report suspicious behavior.

3. Inspect ladders, lifts and scaffold and ensure crew is using safely.

4. Respond to blood borne pathogen cleanups and ensure proper techniques are followed and hazardous waste is disposed of properly.

5. Ensure employees have necessary personal protective equipment and know how to use it. Keep material safety data sheets up to date.

6. Respond to fire alarms and weather alerts taking appropriate action as required.

15%  Miscellaneous

1. Lead crew in setups of furniture and equipment as needed for events and construction of indoor and outdoor stages.  Communicate with person(s) requesting set up for detail on expectations/needs.

2. Assist maintenance staff when needed.

3. Maintain inventory of supplies/chemicals

4. Perform laundry duties

5. Coordinate/communicate with Administration for any specific needs on campus.

6. Performance of additional tasks as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

·    Possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license and qualify for state vehicle operation, or have the ability to obtain these upon hire

·    The physical ability to carry, push, pull and lift 50 pounds on a continual basis

·    The physical ability to work in various positions, i.e. with arms above your head for periods of time; bending, twisting, crawling, squatting, climbing, stooping or kneeling; on scaffolding, ladders or stairs; standing, sitting or walking, while continuously performing job functions

Desired Qualifications:

·    Knowledge of industrial cleaning chemicals

·    Knowledge or training in caustic & toxic cleaning chemicals

·    Have knowledge of basic safety regulations and procedures (i.e. interpreting MSDS Sheets, safe lifting techniques, use of PPE)

·    The ability to communicate verbally or in written form and follow direction from supervisors with or without accommodations

·    Supervisory experience in a customer service related field

·    Ability to independently organize and prioritize workload

  • Ability to provide lead work, instruction and administrative support for custodial crew
  • Ability to perform a variety of daily, periodic and seasonal duties
  • Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, staff, and students

  • Ability to work independently
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary trainings

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a minimum hourly wage of $16.50.
