Jim Miller has spent a lifetime at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, from campus elementary school through college and an award-winning career as head baseball coach. His 2003 retirement didn't last.
"I've had a love affair with the school,'' Miller said.
He met his wife, Carol, when he was teaching high school in Fort Atkinson and she was a student teacher from UW-Whitewater. She's the university's director of financial aid.
Jim Miller has coached generations of athletes, watching and helping as they learn the lessons of hard work, perseverance and time management that pay off in competition and in life. They call him "Mills'' and invite him to their weddings and baby christenings.
"Most of the athletes feel that athletics really opened some doors for them," Miller said. "They're being successful from the background they got here at UW-Whitewater in athletics."
He fielded messages from all over the country when the campus baseball field was named the James B. Miller Stadium. Now Miller coaches alumni who want to find ways to help the next generation at UW-Whitewater.
"I sincerely believe in this place," he said.
