In the short time that Kirby Mills has been at UW-Whitewater, he has quickly learned about Warhawk pride. He’s following Chancellor Beverly Kopper’s lead in wearing purple every day he’s on campus.
“I heard the chancellor says she wears purple every day,” he said. “So, purple quickly became a part of my everyday wardrobe.”
Hired at the start of the 2015 academic year as the assistant athletic director for development, Mills is excited by the prospect of new leadership under Chancellor Kopper.
“Chancellor Kopper, Director of Athletics Amy Edmonds and I all share a passion for elevating our student-athlete experience,” he said. “Through the motto of ‘Powered by Tradition’ we are going to call on our alumni and supporters to help us raise our levels of success on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”
Mills has adapted to the Whitewater community seamlessly, having grown up in what he calls a similar area in southern Delaware.
“From the first time I stepped on this vibrant campus and every day since then I have been falling in love with this place,” he said. “The people alone show just how special this University is.”
Mills earned his undergraduate degree in journalism in 2011 from the University of Maryland and his master’s degree in business administration in 2015. He had great success in developing alumni engagement and fundraising programs while working in operations and development roles for his alma mater. From relationship building and cultivation to the solicitation of major gifts at a Division I institution, Mills is prepared to build a robust development plan for the athletics department.
“Most often when you are part of an organization that has had as much success as this one, the opportunity for growth is a hard thing to find,” he said. “Here at Whitewater, we have an incredible opportunity to develop a plan that will help lift the department and sports programs to new heights — above the solid foundation already in place.”
