Gail Sauter

Gail Sauter is passionate about helping people create value in their lives.

While she was earning her master's degree in social work, she worked at a community health clinic in Milwaukee, and helped win a grant that funded a nutrition and education program for young parents.Sauter found the work exciting and rewarding and stayed at the clinic for eight years after graduation.

"For me, being a social worker is being an agent of social change," she said.

She also came to realize that worthwhile programs need financial support, which led her to a career in fundraising, grant writing and major gift development.

"I could see a lot of good that needed to be done in the world," Sauter said. "I realized there are people who are highly philanthropic, and they want to give. It's a joy to them to be able to endow or support good work."

One wall of her office displays a colorful painting by an artist in a therapeutic art program in Waukesha where she worked for five years. It reminds her of organizations such as UW-Whitewater that provide people with educational and social opportunities to positively transform their lives.

"In fundraising you see the good," she said. "What you really do is draw attention to the good that can be fostered with additional financial support."
