UMD Faculty Time Use Study

Developed and administered by the ADVANCE Program for Inclusive Excellence at the University of Maryland, the Faculty Time Use Study was created to provide a qualitative data measurement tool to better understand how faculty on U.S. college campuses use their time.

The study has been administered twice by UMD (once in 2015 and once in 2017). It is not clear when and if this survey will be administered again. Given the time-intensive nature of this study – participants are required to keep detailed records of their work activities weekly for several weeks and to complete surveys related to their work activities – participation in this survey is significantly lower than in faculty surveys (such as the FSSE and HERI Faculty surveys), which require a much smaller time commitment from participating faculty.

UW-Whitewater administered the survey in Spring 2017. The Summary Report is available here.
