Fall 2020 Book Groups

"Stamped from the Beginning" Discussion Group

"Stamped from the Beginning"
By Dr. Ibram X. Kendi

Stamped from the Beginning uses the life stories of five major American intellectuals to offer a window into the contentious debates between assimilationists and segregationists and between racists and antiracists...Kendi shows how and why some of our leading proslavery and pro-civil rights thinkers have challenged or helped cement racist ideas in America.”- Dr. Kendi’s website.

In this book group we will discuss how racism remains permeated in society and how even individuals perceived to be forward thinking have remained complicit in maintaining the status quo. We will seek to identify ways to shed light on ourselves and our institutions in moving towards enacting anti-racism. This book is over 500+ pages, so a deep commitment to the work will be necessary to benefit from participation.

"Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto"  Discussion Group

"Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto "
By Kevin M. Gannon

In this time of stress and pandemic, finding hope can be challenging. Radical Hope takes a critically reflective lens to our teaching to remind us that the pedagogical choices we make and the ways we interact with our students have the ability to change ourselves, our students, and, possibly, our institutions. While grounded in theory, Gannon weaves in personal narrative and practical advice to help us examine our personal pedagogical choices. We’ll explore Gannon’s ideas for developing and maintaining our hope in our students, our teaching, and academia.
