Examining the Intersections of Equity, Trauma-Informed Pedagogy, and Student Learning

Friday, March 26, 2021 | 1:00 - 3:00 pm

Dr. Mays Imad is a professor of Genetics, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Pima Community College and the founding coordinator of their Teaching and Learning Center. In this webinar, Dr. Imad defines trauma, discusses the impact of trauma on the brain and learning, and shares teaching strategies that can mitigate the impact of trauma and support learning.

During this session, we will watch the webinar together with active use of the chat space to share ideas, along with pauses for discussion of some of the central ideas of Dr. Imad’s presentation and how these ideas apply to our students at UW-W.

Attendees will learn:

(1) How the neuroscience of toxic/traumatic stress relates to learning.
(2) Learn evidence-based strategies to help students (and ourselves) mitigate stress to better learn and thrive.

(3) Examine the theoretical framework of trauma-informed teaching and its practical application in our courses.

Presenter: Dr. Mays Imad (recorded webinar) with a discussion led by Heather Pelzel,
LEARN Center director, and Kristin Plessel, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs
