Free tax clinic at UW-Whitewater

tax clinicThe IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) at UW-Whitewater offers free tax help and free electronic filing of 2015 federal and Wisconsin tax returns.

For the spring 2016 filing season, VITA will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. from January 30 through April 6. Note that the tax clinic will be closed Saturday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 23. VITA is located in Timothy J. Hyland Hall, room 1001, across from parking lot #7 on Starin Road.

No appointments are needed; it is first come, first served. VITA at UW-Whitewater is staffed by IRS-certified student preparers and supervised by faculty in the Department of Accounting.
Please note the following:
- Only federal and state returns for full-year Wisconsin residents will be prepared
- Only simple returns will be prepared (Schedules A, B and D, C-EZ and a simple Schedule C)
- Both spouses must be present to sign forms if filing electronically
- If you do not have a Social Security Number for you or a dependent, you should complete Form SS-5, Social Security Number Application. (See http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf). This form should be submitted to the Social Security Administration Office. (See http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/medicaid/contacts/medcontact8.htm) for a list of Offices in Wisconsin.

Taxpayers should bring the following items to VITA:
• Photo identification
• Valid Social Security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents
• Birth dates for primary, secondary and dependents on the tax return
• Current year's tax package, if received
• Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers
• All Forms 1095 (forms relating to health insurance coverage)
• All Forms 1099 (interest and dividend income statements)
• All Forms 1098 (for example, statements of tuition paid and interest paid)
• A copy of last year's federal and state returns, if available
• A voided check (for bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit)
• Other relevant information about income and expenses
• Total paid for day care
• Day care provider's identifying number
• A Renters Certificate (obtained from your landlord) or your 2015 property tax bill for your residence if you believe you are eligible for the Wisconsin Homestead Credit
