"Surreal" experience takes UW-Whitewater group to Panama to document jaguars
15 students and two faculty members from UW-Whitewater spent more than two weeks in Panama to document jaguars. They trekked into the rainforest at Chagres National Park to collect what donated camera traps captured, including photos of two previously undocumented jaguars.

Campus Kudos
|
|
Kudos to Elisabeth Harrahy, associate professor of biological sciences, who was a co-recipient of a grant of approximately $96,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection through the Wisconsin Groundwater Coordinating Council. The two-year study, "Sublethal Effects of Chronic Exposure to Neonicotinoid Pesticides on Aquatic Organisms," will support undergraduate research students for two summers at UW-Whitewater. Neonicotinoid pesticides have been linked to the decline of honeybees and other pollinators, but less is known about their effects on aquatic invertebrates and fish.
Kudos to Jo Ann Oravec, professor of information technology and supply chain management, for publishing "The 'Dark Side' of Academics? Emerging Issues in the Gaming and Manipulation of Metrics in Higher Education" and "Academic Metrics and the Community Engagement of Tertiary Education Institutions: Emerging Issues in Gaming, Manipulation, and Trust."
Kudos to Sydney Loomans, who is double majoring in finance and supply chain management, for being named student of the year by APICS Milwaukee Chapter in response to her outstanding support of the chapter and her service as the UW-Whitewater APICS Student Chapter President.
Kudos to Jodi Simek, International Students and Scholar Services, for conducting a day-long training program “J-1 Advising: Intermediate” at the Wisconsin Association of International Educators conference in Madison on April 1, 2019. Simek is a nationally approved trainer for F and J visa types through NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
Kudos to Amanda Krier-Jenkins, assistant director of University Housing, for being selected as a participant at ACUHO-I’s Mid-Level Leadership Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, kudos to Terry Tumbarello, associate director of University Housing, for being invited as a speaker at this conference. His presentation was “Strategic Thinking & Leadership From Where You Are Now.”
Kudos to Balaji Sankaranarayanan, who will receive the inaugural Graduate Teaching Award from the School of Graduate Studies. Sankaranarayanan is an assistant professor in the Department of Information Technology and Supply Chain Management who teaches in both the MBA and DBA programs. He has also received the Hermsen Teaching Award from the College of Business and Economics. Ralph Turner, COO of the Cleveland Clinic – Indian River in Vero Beach, Florida -- for whom Sankaranarayanan served as DBA dissertation committee chair -- wrote that “Dr. Balaji’s sense of responsibility to ensure my success was never spoken, but demonstrated in his willingness to mentor in any mode necessary to ensure his instruction was well understood.”
Kudos to Terri DeWalt and the team at University Health and Counseling Services, whose doctoral internship program was granted accreditation through the American Psychological Association. UW-Whitewater is the second university in the state of Wisconsin to have this designation. UHCS was granted the longest accreditation timeframe given by the APA – 10 years – a testament to the strength of the program and the doctoral interns who have provided hundreds of counseling hours on campus.
Kudos to the UW-Whitewater Aspiring Educators Chapter, which won the 2019-20 statewide award for chapter excellence by the Wisconsin Education Association Council, Aspiring Educators State Board. The award is based on three tenants: teacher quality, community outreach and political action. The Warhawk chapter was also recognized for having the highest membership increase in the state and exceptional advertising and marketing.
