Researchers conduct statewide study of seniors’ use of smart medical devices
 
A grant-funded interdisciplinary research project that partners social work and cybersecurity is connecting University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students with seniors across the state of Wisconsin.

The research project, titled “Privacy Protection Among Community-Dwelling Older Wisconsinites in the Age of Internet of Things,” investigates the privacy practices of seniors who use smart medical devices, such as glucose monitors, hearing aids and EKG monitors, which collect personal health information and connect wirelessly to the internet.

A long-standing tradition of hard work and achievement was on full display this spring as participants in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s American Marketing Association chapter retained top-tier placement in a competitive event.

UW-Whitewater AMA students retained the AMA International Chapter of the Year or Platinum Circle title for the 11th consecutive year at the International Collegiate Conference, held March 17-19 in Chicago.

Cinco de Mayo celebrations
 
The Whitewater and Rock County campuses enjoyed celebrating Cinco de Mayo, which marks the anniversary of Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 over the French empire. The day has grown into a cultural celebration with friendly gatherings, music and traditional Mexican food.

Kudos to Ken Brosky, associate professor at UW-Whitewater at Rock County, and Narendra Regmi, assistant professor of economics, who were named 2022-2023 Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars. The program provides UW System faculty and teaching academic staff a unique opportunity to collaborate with other exceptional teachers from across the UW System and from various disciplines. In addition to discussing influential literature, participants are guided through systematic research focused on improving student learning through a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project. Kudos to Robert Benjamin, professor of physics, whose research on space has been cited by more than 10,000 other research works, according to Google Scholar. This means that other researchers are developing, building upon, critiquing or otherwise referencing his work. More than 150 of Benjamin’s publications are listed on Google Scholar, most focusing on the interstellar matter between stars and the structure of the Milky Way. According to Martha Stephenson, reference and instruction librarian, Benjamin’s work has been regularly cited more than 500 times per year since 2011, with one article alone cited more than 1,300 times.

Artanya Wesley named among the 2022 Women of Influence

Each year the Milwaukee Business Journal honors key female leaders in Southeast Wisconsin through its Women of Influence program. This year the committee received 140 nominations. We are pleased to announce that Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Artanya Wesley was selected for honors in the “mentor” category! We are excited to celebrate her and 29 other honorees of this year’s Women of Influence class. The event will be held on Tuesday, June 21, at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee.

Free spaghetti dinners continue through summer
 
All are welcome! Free spaghetti to-go meals will continue to be offered 5-5:30 p.m., every Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Whitewater. You may pick up the meal at the 133 S. Franklin Street entrance. If you need more than one meal to get you through the week, you are welcome to more meals.

Each meal contains:
  • 1 pound cooked spaghetti
  • 2 seasoned meatballs
  • Choice of 1/2 cup of marinara sauce or 1/2 cup of alfredo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese
  • Italian seasoning
