VIDEO: Finding the Fingerprints of Urban Trees

Rocio Duchesne-Onoro, associate professor of geography, geology and environmental science, worked with undergraduate students to conduct research with implications for urban planning. Duchesne-Onoro says the goal of the project, titled “Spectral Characterization of Urban Trees in Southern Wisconsin,” is to identify key features of all the trees within a city. Urban planners and forest managers are interested in what trees to plant or remove and the extent of their canopy to reduce the heat in cities. The most effective way to identify specific tree species is from above, using satellite and aerial imagery. Duchesne-Onoro’s team measured each leaf’s radiation emission and performed a statistical analysis of that data — similar to how fingerprints are unique to every human.
