Students ‘excel’ in international spreadsheet challenge
Earlier this fall, UW-Whitewater’s Excelerators participated in an international Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge competition that is stylistically fashioned after Esports. Jack Oman, a supply chain management major, and Joshua Majors, a double major in business analytics and marketing, both placed internationally. Their placement also is notable for the entire university.

UW-Whitewater to host Special Olympics in 2023
More than 1,800 Wisconsin Special Olympics athletes and coaches will gather at UW-Whitewater to compete in the 2023 State Summer Games. The event is scheduled to take place June 8-10 and will include competitions in powerlifting, gymnastics, track and field, tennis, soccer and cornhole.

Kudos to the voice students who represented themselves and UW-Whitewater extremely well at this year’s Wisconsin National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions in November.
The semifinalists were Colin Allison, music major, Tanner Engeseth, music major, Presley Hodges, international business major, Allison Kolimaga, music major, Sarah Parker, music major, and Norma Rodriguez Perkins, psychology major.

Kudos to the Grounded cast and crew, particularly Moira Kowalski, theatre major, who has been nominated for a Certificate of Merit for stage management and Nadia Wolowik, early childhood education major, who has been nominated for the Irene Ryan acting scholarship. Both nominations were submitted by representatives of the Kennedy Center American Theater Festival.

Joshua Kapfer, professor of biology, is co-author and primary editor of “Amphibians and Reptiles of Wisconsin,” a 1,176-page hardcover volume, which appeals to both scientific and casual readers. Kapfer’s lifelong love of amphibians and reptiles is shared with the undergraduates in his field-based classes at UW-Whitewater.

“Searching for Earth’s Secrets,” an interactive, educational exhibit, is coming to the Community Engagement Center Dec. 12 through Feb. 28.
This outreach project, brought to campus by graduate student Sarah Treadwell, is a part of the International Ocean Discovery Project. This research impacts our understanding of climate change, the origin of life and plate tectonics.

The Crossman Gallery will be hosting its annual Juried Student Art Exhibition early next semester. All students, regardless of year or major, are encouraged to submit up to three artworks of any medium and scale for consideration. Applications are due Friday, Jan. 6. Awards, including monetary prizes, will be given at the reception in February.

44th Annual UW-Whitewater ceramics sale
The annual ceramics sale is here! It will take place in the Crossman Gallery in the Greenhill Center of the Arts building on Friday, Dec. 16, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be handmade, functional ceramic artwork created by members of the UW-Whitewater Department of Art and Design’s ceramics program, past and present. Sales from items purchased support the student UW-Whitewater Ceramics Organization.

Faculty/staff role updates
Kara Meissen has joined the College of Letters and Sciences as a senior academic advisor. Kara has over 16 years of service at UW-Whitewater as an advisor in the Academic Advising and Exploration Center and has worked closely with the College of Letters and Sciences during that time. A Warhawk alum, Kara is also an Warhawk Athletics Hall of Fame inductee for cross country.
Megan Walbrant has accepted the position of web content strategist with University Marketing and Communications. She previously served as digital marketing specialist in the department. “Megan has done outstanding work to enhance our web efforts and I’m immensely excited about this opportunity for her to further shine in support of our university mission and goals,” said Jeff Angileri, executive director.
