The 2023 Spring Diversity Forum, which will span three days, centers on disability justice and encouraging opportunities for learning, reflection and community building. Join us by welcoming the keynote speaker Lydia X.Z. Brown, an advocate, organizer, educator, attorney, strategist, and writer whose work focuses on addressing state and interpersonal violence targeting disabled people living at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, faith, language, and nation at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in UC 259.

Campus Kudos
 
Kudos to UW-Whitewater at Rock County student Deanna Renteria, who was chosen by YWCA of Rock County as the Young Woman of Distinction! All the honorees will be recognized at the 48th Annual Women of Distinction Awards, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, at the Glen Erin Golf Club/Celtic House in Janesville. Kudos to Kimberly Van Wiepz, M.S. in special education, on receiving the UW-Whitewater School of Graduate Studies Fall 2022 Research Award – Capstone. Her thesis, “Increasing Communication Initiations through Functional Communication Training,” explored whether a functional communication training (FCT) intervention could increase communication initiations for a student while decreasing vocal outbursts.

Kudos to UC Graphics and Marketing for taking second place in the student brochure category in the Association of College Unions International "Steal This Idea Competition" for the UC's SOAR handout, which was designed in spring 2022.

Kudos to Daniel Szelogowski, M.S in computer science, on receiving the UW-Whitewater School of Graduate Studies Fall 2022 Research Award - Thesis. The thesis, “Deep Learning for Musical Form: Recognition and Analysis,” is an example of the opportunities in the graduate computer science program across all majors and fields. Szelogowski also earned a B.M. music education in 2021.

Kudos to Jo Ann Oravec, professor of information technology and supply chain management, for publishing an article in the Peace Chronicle of the Peace and Justice Studies Association: "One Hundred Years of Robotics: Fostering Resilience in Response to Technological Disruption." Read more »

Yerkes Observatory: 125 years of history
 
Amanda Bauer, deputy director of Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay and head of science and education, will describe the history of the Whitewater observatory facility, the birthplace of modern astrophysics, and the future trajectory of this remarkable facility. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 3, in Upham Hall (RM 141). There will also be open telescopes at the campus observatory after the talk (weather permitting).

Free spaghetti meals
 
All are welcome! Free spaghetti meals are offered 5-6 p.m., every Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Whitewater. You may pick up the meal at the 133 S. Franklin Street entrance. If you need more than one meal to get you through the week, you are welcome to more meals.

Each meal contains:
  • 1 pound cooked spaghetti
  • 2 seasoned meatballs
  • Choice of 1/2 cup of marinara sauce or 1/2 cup of alfredo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese
  • Italian seasoning
