Polar Plunge
On Saturday, March 18 — a 20-degree day! — Warhawks participated in the Polar Plunge at Cravath Lakefront Park in downtown Whitewater to benefit Special Olympics Wisconsin. $28,834 was raised for the cause!

UW-Whitewater was proud to host the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, which featured 11 teams from all over the U.S., on campus March 15-18.

Jake Williams, head coach, and Jeromie Meyer, a graduate student who plays on the Warhawk men’s wheelchair basketball team, were guests on Wisconsin Public Radio’s Morning Show on March 15. The National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament took place last week in Whitewater and included 11 teams from across the country. Head Coach Jake Williams, a UW-Whitewater alumnus and former member of the team, and current player Talen Jourdan, a business major from Deerfield, were interviewed by the NBC15 news to speak about their connection to the sport. Nicholas Gulig, associate professor of languages and literatures, was interviewed by WUWM 89.7 FM. Gulig, who has authored three poetry books, uses poetry as a way to bridge meaning. WUWM »

The Wisconsin Poet Laureate Commission selected Nicholas Gulig to be the state poet laureate on Jan. 9. He is the first Asian American to be chosen for the position, which offers the chance to promote poetry writing and reading in Wisconsin and honor the state's natural and cultural landmarks. In Division III championship play, Warhawk Men’s Basketball put out their best effort to qualify for their sixth and most recent trip — making it to the Final Four. The effort was in honor of Derek Gray, the team’s star player who unexpectedly passed away from a cardiac event in late July 2022 while taking part in a youth basketball camp on campus. “Of Chicken, Myths & Fantasy: It Is Storied Tales Drives Our Dreams” is on view in the Crossman Gallery until Thursday, March 23. Schuh Visiting Artist Della Wells and students who participated in her collage workshop are displaying 115 artworks, including a mural by Isabella Clark, Gloria Cornelius, Carolyn Ellefson, Taylor Harris, Phoenix Higginson, E. Jeninga, Reana Smith, and Isaac Stern.

Walled Gardens exhibit begins
Come check out Roberta’s Art Gallery’s "Walled Gardens" exhibit, featuring pieces by artist Ben Orozco. Orozco's artwork challenges the way we see farming and the flattening of landscapes. In collaboration with UW-Whitewater Sustainability, the exhibit features concepts of monocultures as stripes, grids and circles. This exhibit runs from Thursday, March 23, through Tuesday, April 25.

In January 2023, Nicholas Gulig was selected for a two-year appointment as the state’s poet laureate. Gulig is a Thai American poet, Fulbright Fellow and recipient of many additional accolades for his work. Join us at the Community Engagement Center at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, for an evening of poetry and expression with the state’s top advocate for this art form.

We are now accepting nominations for the 2023 Regents University Staff Excellence Awards. The purpose of these awards is to recognize the dedicated work, vital services, initiative, and outstanding contributions of the UW System’s university staff. Two awards of $7,500 will be made — one for an individual and one for a program. The link below provides more details on the nominee categories, selection criteria, and nomination materials needed. The deadline to complete your nomination is April 14, 2023.

Brenda Rust O'Beirne to retire
Dr. Brenda Rust O'Beirne will be retiring at the end of the summer session. A celebration of her retirement is planned for 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, in the Hamilton Room of the University Center.
