Student speaker Hollyn Peterson
As she settled into UW-Whitewater’s Department of Art and Design within the College of Arts and Communication, the three-time cancer survivor says the entire faculty were instrumental in helping her chart her future path in life. She will be the student speaker for the morning commencement ceremony at 10 p.m. Saturday, May 13.

Student speaker Davin Stavroplos
Stavroplos, who will be the first member of his immediate family to get a degree in higher education, made a mark on the UW-Whitewater campus in a number of ways since he first enrolled in the fall of 2018, including serving as president of Whitewater Student Government. He will be the student speaker for the afternoon commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13.

Commencement speaker Mike Domitrz to take the stage
The desire to be an actor led the Whitewater native to attend college at Loyola University in Chicago, a city with ample opportunities to see world-class theater. He was flourishing as an undergraduate when, one day in 1989, a phone call came that would change the course of his life, causing him to transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and pursue an entirely different academic path. He will serve as commencement speaker at both ceremonies on Saturday, May 13.

Kudos to Courtney Luedke, associate professor of higher education leadership, who presented three papers at the American Educational Leadership Association (AERA) conference in Chicago, Illinois. Luedke presented a solo-authored paper titled “Reimagining counterspaces in higher education” and a collaborative paper with Crystal Garcia titled “Purpose-driven involvement for college Students of Color: ‘I had to prioritize differently, schedule differently.’” Luedke's third paper, “Assets of Undocu/DACAmented Latinx students: How and when do institutions recognize, reward, and exploit them?” was co-written with UW-Whitewater HELEAD alumnus Matt Denney, who is a doctoral student at the University of Arizona, and collaborators Stephen Santa-Ramirez and Julian Mendez.
Kudos to the Forensics Team for completing their competitive season at the NFA national tournament — advancing at NFA is considered one of the hardest things to do in college forensics! The team placed ninth overall in the President’s II Division, earning a team award for the first time since 2018. Communication major Amanda Eaton advanced in Program Oral Interpretation, and biology major Megan Ehle made team history being the first freshman to advance in two events: Dramatic Interpretation and Program Oral Interpretation. Other members of the team were elementary education major Kolden Severson and human resource management major Kensington Narkis. The team is coached by Emily Leong and Brian Schanen.
