Lawton Grant

Lawton Undergraduate Minority Retention Grant 

The LUMRG aims to increase the retention rate of underrepresented students by providing them with a series of higher education opportunities while reducing the burden of student debt. The award is renewable, applicants must reapply every year to receive the aid.

The LUMRG is an incentive-based award. In order to receive the grant, qualifying applicants must complete an application and meet all 10 qualifications listed under the Lawton Grant Qualifications tab. 

New Applicants: 

Complete a New Applicant application and submit the following items: 

  • Financial Literacy (Quiz or Waiver)
  • Professional Resume or Involvement Form
  • Personal Goal Statement

Renewal Applicants: 

Complete a Renewal Applicant application and submit the following items: 

  • Financial Literacy (Quiz or Waiver)
  • Professional Resume

Applicants may submit their completed applications and supporting materials in person at one of our office locations, via email, and/or online through Canvas. Contact the office to enroll in our Canvas account.

The Lawton Grant award provides funds to qualifying undergraduate minority students. Please see below for a list of qualifications: 

  1. WI Resident
  2. U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  3. Designated ethnicity: African-American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, and/or *Southeast Asian
  4. Demonstrate financial need determined by the Financial Aid Office
  5. Sophomore status or above (24+ credits earned)
  6. Attained at least a 2.0 GPA
  7. Enrolled full-time
  8. Maintained Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  9. Has not exceeded the maximum awarding of 8 semesters
  10. Completed FAFSA

*Southeast Asian applicants must be of Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and/or Vietnamese heritage. 

The LUMRG award is available for qualifying students enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, including students at our Rock County Campus. Transfer students with 24 credits and/or more will be evaluated on grades received at their previous institution. 

New Applicant (Typically Freshamn, Sophomore, or Transfer Student)

  1. Must acquire access to the Lawton Grant Canvas course.
  2. Email coordinators or stop by the Lawton Grant Office and ask about the application process.
  3. Lawton Grant Undergraduate Coordinator will send a Canvas course invitation to student’s school email address.
  4. Accept the invitation and log into Canvas to explore the course.
  5. Follow the correct steps in completing the designated application (can be found within the Canvas course).
  6. Once completed, the Lawton Grant Office will review the application.
  7. If the application is completed correctly, the student will receive a confirmation email stating their application has or will be processed.
  8. If the application is completed incorrectly, the submitted application will be marked incomplete with comments referring to the mistakes.
  9. Re-submit the application if it was marked incomplete after making the proper adjustments.


Renewal Applicant (Typically Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Student)

  1. Renewal applicants should already have access to the Lawton Grant Canvas course.
  2. Re-apply to the most recent application (these students do not need to complete the Personal Goal Statement).
  3. ‚ÄčOnce completed, the Lawton Grant Office will review the application.
  4. If the application is completed correctly, the student will receive a confirmation email stating their application has or will be processed.
  5. If the application is completed incorrectly, the submitted application will be marked incomplete with comments referring to the mistakes.
  6. Re-submit the application if it was marked incomplete after making the proper adjustments.

  

The award provides between $2,500 and $3,500 per academic year to qualifying students. Please note that all awards represent the total financial aid granted per academic year to a qualifying applicant. The award amount may change in accordance to an applicant's Financial Need status. 

The Lawton Grant is awarded based off applicant's cumulative GPA:

3.50 - 4.00 $3,500
3.00 - 3.49 $3,250
2.50 - 2.99 $2,750
2.00 - 2.49 $2,500

*Award represents total received per academic year. 

The Lawton Grant application has a rolling deadline, however, it is first come first serve. We encourage students to complete their application as soon as possible as funds are limited. Students only need to submit one application per academic year. Once a student completes their Lawton Grant application, please allow the Lawton Grant and Financial Aid Office about 2 weeks to process and distribute the funds. 

2021-2022 New and Renewal Lawton Grant Applications Deadline: 

The rolling deadline begins September 30. After September 30, please complete your application as soon as possible as awards will be disbursed on a first-come first-serve basis. We are currently still accepting applications.
