Definitions
<p><strong>Academic Department: </strong>The foundational units of a university, organized by discipline and a group of faculty and academic staff members to manage instruction, research, and public service missions of the university within specific fields and operating under a school, providing tailored degree programs, specialized curriculum, and resources to students.</p>
<p><strong>Center/Institute/Center-like Units: </strong>A single or multi-disciplinary unit, with programmatic autonomy, and an annual operating budget, organized to conduct education, research and/or service activities with active involvement by faculty and have a logical connection with the instructional and/or research efforts of the university. It is a unit designed to foster, enhance, and coordinate interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service initiatives that often extend beyond traditional department or college boundaries.</p>
<p><strong>Endorsement:</strong> A letter of support from department chairs, deans, directors, and/or key faculty who will provide essential support for and who have an interest in the center.</p>
<p><strong>Evaluation:</strong> A five-year systematic process of judging the fulfillment of the mission and purpose of the center, strengths and weaknesses, accountability, and validation of results or outcomes providing information and data to improve effectiveness and guide decision-making on continuity.</p>
<p><strong>Life Cycle:</strong> Involves the creation, growth, maturity, and review on a five-year renewal cycle of a center or institute to ensure ongoing relevance, funding, and intellectual vitality.</p>
<p><strong>Monitoring: </strong>A periodic assessment and tracking of status and performance of the center against predefined goals, deliverables, and interventions.</p>
