Whose advocacy, activism, and/or scholarship has encouraged and/or led to social justice and organizational change;

Who have fought to advance diversity and inclusion and remain determined to do so through their continued work on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community here at UW-Whitewater;

Poorman" style="float: right;" />About the Award:
Dr. P.B. Poorman served as a faculty member in the Psychology Department at UW-Whitewater for 11 years earning the rank of full professor; her scholarly work focused on underserved populations and intimate partner violence and explored issues of power, privilege, and oppression. She played a central role in efforts to assess and improve campus climate for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff not only at UW-Whitewater, but across the Universities of Wisconsin. Dr. Poorman played an instrumental role in the foundation of the UW System Inclusivity Initiative for LGBTQ People as a member of the original Steering and Research Committees. Her contributions to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff through research, teaching, service, and advocacy led to the naming of the P.B. Poorman Pride Center at UW-Whitewater in her honor in 2008.

Eligibility:
We accept nominations from all students, university staff, non-instructional academic staff, instructional academic staff, faculty, and administrators. Those eligible for a nomination include university staff, non-instructional academic staff, instructional academic staff, faculty, and on-campus graduate interns and assistants.

Nominated staff and faculty should have worked at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for at least two full years.

Nominated on-campus graduate interns and assistants should be currently enrolled with at least two semesters of completed coursework or have graduated from UW-Whitewater within the last academic year.

*Please note that past recipients of this award are not eligible for a future nomination.

Selection Process:
The Chancellor’s Committee on Inclusive Excellence and the Chancellor’s Committee on LGBTQ+ Inclusive Excellence invites you to submit nominations. Representatives from the Chancellor’s Committee on LGBTQ+ Inclusive Excellence will serve on a subcommittee to select an awardee.

Application Process:
To nominate an on-campus graduate intern or assistant, staff member, or faculty member please write a letter of nomination outlining the nominee’s contributions to diversity and inclusive excellence on behalf of LGBTQ+ people at UW-Whitewater. In crafting your nomination, please consider not only the advocacy of your nominee but also the shifting climate that could impact LGBTQ+ community support, recognizing that support of marginalized communities is impacted by various outside forces that shape the possibilities of the work. One’s advocacy or activism may not always be visible, at times taking place behind closed doors, but that does not diminish the intention behind or the impact of the work being done. Also, keep in mind that actions don’t always result in immediate changes. This award acknowledges the challenges faced along the way and seeks to recognize the continued efforts of those advocating for the LGBTQ+ community at UW-Whitewater.

To help with the evaluation process, we recommend a letter of at least one page in length and 2 professional references (one may be the nominator is not a self-nomination) to be checked at a later date by the award subcommittee. Self-nominations are welcome.

If you’re nominating another individual, please make sure they consent to the nomination.

 <AccordionContent type="xhtml" UID="ed5e88e9bb80fbe415ae864e2b98fab5" label="Accordion Content" readonly="false" hidden="false" required="false" indexable="false" openByDefault="false" CharacterLimit="" Height="" CIID="">
The Women, Gender Equity, and Community Leadership awards will celebrate diverse and innovative leadership, including those outside of traditional definitions of power. This award recognizes leaders of diverse gender identities, as well as leaders working on issues of gender equity, diversity, and inclusion in various community spaces.

About the Award:
For 20 years, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has celebrated the unique and transformative leadership of women at our university and in our shared Whitewater community through the Women in Leadership Awards. Historically sponsored by the Women’s Issues Committee, these awards recognized leadership that is collaborative and equity minded. Often leadership is viewed as a quality held by those in positions of power. But the Women in Leadership ceremony sought to recognize many different kinds of leaders; leaders who build community, engage in mentoring, sustain collegiality, model resilience, and more. These kinds of leaders are not always found in traditional leadership positions but nonetheless, transform their workplace and communities.

As we celebrate the 20th year of these awards, the Women in Leadership recognitions enter a new era. Specifically, the Women’s Issues Committee has merged with the Chancellor’s Committee on Inclusive Excellence. And we have taken that opportunity to rename these awards, now titled Women, Gender Equity, and Community Leadership Awards.

Like always, these awards will celebrate diverse and innovative leadership, including those outside of traditional definitions of power. But with the new name, we want to expand our leadership recognition to include diverse gender identities, as well as leaders working on issues of gender equity, diversity, and inclusion in various community spaces in our selection criteria.

Eligibility:
We accept nominations from students, classified staff, non-instructional academic staff, instructional academic staff, faculty, administrators, and community members.

Nominated employees should have worked at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for at least 2 full years.

Nominated students should have at least junior standing at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Community members are also eligible for this award. By community, the award's subcommittee means individuals that embody the values of UW-Whitewater, both in our immediate region and global community of alumni and friends.

Selection Process:
The Chancellor’s Committee on Inclusive Excellence and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies invites you to submit nominations. Representatives from the Chancellor’s Committee, including a Women’s and Gender Studies department representative, will serve on a sub committee to select awardees.

Each year, at least 4 leaders will be recognized with the Women, Gender Equity, and Community Leadership Award. The sub committee strives to recognize a breadth of leadership types, campus roles, and community contributions, informing the annual selection of awardees.

Application Process:
To nominate a student, employee, or community member, please write a letter of nomination outlining the nominee’s contributions to leadership at UW-Whitewater and/or surrounding communities. In crafting your nomination, please consider expansive definitions of leadership and influence. Leadership does not always look like traditional forms of power and authority; rather, these awards seek to recognize diverse forms of leadership, celebrating community building, mentorship, tenacity, and more. Nominations can also consider the various intersectional approaches, practices, and initiatives nominees are leading related to issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in institutional and community spaces.

To help with the evaluation process, we recommend a letter of at least a page in length and 2 professional references to be checked at a later date by the award subcommittee.

(This award may be given under special circumstances at the discretion of the award's subcommittee in the absence of a person receiving three prior awards.)
