UW-Whitewater’s Nicholas Gulig wants to share his love of literature after being named new State Poet Laureate of Wisconsin
Nicholas Gulig, an associate professor of languages and literatures, was recently named to the new two-year term of State Poet Laureate of Wisconsin.
As the State Poet Laureate, Gulig will serve as an ambassador of sorts for the literary craft, while simultaneously undertaking a project that will be completed by the end of 2024. He will give talks at various seminars, workshops and similar venues throughout Wisconsin.

Kudos to the Forensics Team, who took first place at a recent Mid-America Forensics League Tournament. Overall, the team won 14 individual awards, and all team members contributed points to the win. Team members include Grace Palmer, music major, Kolden Severson, elementary education major, Amanda Eaton, general management major, Megan Ehle, biology major, Kensington Narkis, human resource management major, Abby Frey, theatre major, Caryana Dominguez, professional writing and publishing major, and Amelia Moody, general management major.
Kudos to Frank Goza, dean of the College of Letters and Sciences, for presenting the research paper “Focused Ethnography and Facilities Programming” at the 7th World Conference of Qualitative Research in Faro, Portugal, on Jan. 27.
Kudos to Onochie Fan-Osuala, assistant professor of information technology and supply chain management, for publishing an article in the journal Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, in the portfolio of journals published by Nature, titled “Women’s online opinions are still not as influential as those of their male peers in buying decisions.” The study reports on the presence of implicit gender bias in evaluating online consumer reviews.

Kudos to Zak Geer, finance major and president of the Warhawk Men's Bowling Club, for bowling a perfect game with a score of 300 during the team's participation in the 2023 Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic. The event took place the weekend of Jan. 13-15 in Addison, Illinois. Zak was also named to the All-Tournament team.

UW-Whitewater rugby players Myles Schumaker, physical education major, Kyle Fredrickson, physical education major, Hunter Wade, history major, Brian Hanrahan, psychology major, and Colman Karl, integrated science and business major, were recognized in the Goff Rugby Report as top players in men's college rugby. Myles was named to the Midwest All-Stars team, earning a spot on the roster of 23 of the top players in the midwest. Hunter and Kyle were also named to the Rising All-Stars team. Myles, Hunter and Kyle all participated in their respective showcase opportunities the weekend of Jan. 13-15 in Houston, Texas.

Students seeking a four-year nursing degree will have access to a bachelor’s degree program with potential clinical placement at local medical facilities, beginning next fall at the UW-Whitewater Rock County campus. The move also includes a partnership with Edgewood College and will help combat a nursing shortage at local hospitals.

Rindahl to Head UW-Whitewater Football Program
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has announced Jace Rindahl as the next head coach of the Warhawk Football program. Rindahl, a Warhawk alumnus and assistant coach for the last eight seasons, has served as the Interim Head Coach since Kevin Bullis announced his retirement following the 2022 campaign. Rindahl's tenure at the helm of Warhawk football will begin immediately.

UW-Whitewater at Rock County joins National Junior College Athletic Association
Students at UW-Whitewater at Rock County will soon be able to participate in competitive athletics as they move along their educational journey: the National Junior College Athletic Association has accepted the campus as its newest member! Rock County intends to field teams starting in the 2024-25 academic year, and its student-athletes will be eligible for postseason play starting in 2025-26.
