“The Push to Be Better”
During high school, AJ Fitzpatrick accelerated his passion for competing in wheelchair basketball by reaching out to former national champion and UW-Whitewater alumnus Derrick Bisnett. When it came time for AJ to find his next team, Bisnett connected him with Jeremy “Opie” Lade, former coach of UW-Whitewater Men’s Wheelchair Basketball, who helped him to become a Warhawk, excel as a college athlete and discover new ambitious goals to chase. Geoscience research on Lake Superior draws on indigenous knowledge
Five UW-Whitewater students and their professor, Juk Bhattacharyya, conducted research and observed the practices of members of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Projects included topics on indigenous place names as a way to study land, simulating conditions of slope failure, finding sustainable solutions to shoreline erosion and using virtual tours to enhance environmental education.

Warhawk wins prestigious scholarship to study in Japan
UW-Whitewater senior Nicholas Swiatowy, a Japanese studies and political science major from Elkhorn, has earned a merit-based, fully paid Japanese studies scholarship and stipend for the 2023-24 academic year. This prestigious award is presented by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. To earn the award, Swiatowy had to perform well in language tests and face an interview at the Japanese consulate in Chicago.

Amy Oeding honored as a notable alum
A 1990 graduate who earned a BBA, Amy Oeding has worked for a number of the region’s top companies, including Kohl’s Department Stores and Harley-Davidson Motor Co. As UW-Whitewater’s director of alumni relations, she and her team of two host 40 alumni events annually including regional, affinity, cultivation and even international group trips. Oeding is among the regional winners of the Milwaukee Biz Times “Notable Alumni” 2023 class.

Kudos to golfer Ellie Johnson, a biology major from Johnsburg, Illinois, who achieved a remarkable feat by setting an individual record Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Invitational. Johnson's exceptional score of 69 marked the best round ever recorded by a golfer from the Warhawk program, establishing her as a standout player in the team's history.

Kudos to Johnathan Dellinger, assistant professor of communication, who presented his paper "An Order of Operations for Multidisciplinary Community-Based Traditional Knowledge Research" in August at the Centering Indigenous Culture and Knowledge in Indigenous-Led Exposure Monitoring and Risk Reduction Activities Symposium as part of the International Society of Exposure Science conference in Chicago.
Kudos to Kelsey Shoppach and her a capella group for partnering with the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to bring joy to WWII, Korean, and Vietnam veterans. UWCU awarded all ten members a distributed $30,000 on behalf of the credit union’s annual Community Values Scholarship program. Read more »

“The Wall: Witness to the War in Ukraine” opens with an artist reception welcoming Ukrainian photographer Iva Sidash at Roberta’s Gallery on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. Sidash has been working closely with University Marketing and Communications photographer Craig Schreiner and Roberta’s Art Gallery staff to stage the exhibit, which runs until Oct. 20.

Volleyball showdown with UW-Lacrosse, Invitational III
#7 Volleyball hosts UW-La Crosse in a conference showdown in Kris Russell Area in the Williams Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27. Both teams have had impressive records, with the Warhawks boasting 17 wins and 10 losses, including a current winning streak of 4 matches. Lacrosse has proven to be a formidable opponent with an 11-3 record this year. The UW-Whitewater Invitational III comes to Kris Russell Arena 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29,. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, against Elmhurst and Milikin. These matches promise to be a thrilling encounter that will showcase the skills and determination of these talented volleyball teams. If not able to attend the game will be streamed live on the WIAC Network.

New LEARN Center book club
Juk Bhattacharyya, professor of geology, received a Tommy G. Thompson Center grant to bring author Kao Kalia Yang to UW-Whitewater on Nov. 9. As part of her visit, the UWW-LEARN Center is sponsoring a community read of Yang’s latest book, “Somewhere in the Unknown World: A Collective Refugee Memoir.” The book tells the stories of 14 refugees who found the strength to rebuild after loss.

“PAL Joey” auditions
Auditions for the spring 2024 production of “Pal Joey” by Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart and John O’Hara are coming up on Saturday, Sept. 30. The general dance call is at 5 p.m. in Barnett Theatre, and the general voice call is at 6:30 p.m. in CA 30. This is an open call, so the entire campus and Whitewater community is invited.
