Dr. Jim Coons is an Associate Professor of History and affiliate of the Gender and Women’s Studies program, whose research focuses on French political, emotional, and popular culture under Louis XIV. He has been at Whitewater since 2016 after completing his Ph.D. at UW-Madison. His teaching spans European history, including surveys from ancient to contemporary history, as well as topics in Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment eras, as well as thematic focus on women and gender history, political theory, comedy and satire, and the relationships between history and games. He serves as Coordinator for CORE 120, “Historical Perspectives,” and as Chair of the General Education Review Committee. His teaching emphasizes student engagement and participation, especially through hands-on activities and perspective-taking exercises, such as “Reacting to the Past” historical roleplaying games, as well as the intersections of modern popular culture with portrayals of historical events.
