Art

Art majors can specialize in graphic design, multimedia arts, education, art history, or the studio arts medium that interests them most. The major offers a broad understanding of art along with a series of options and electives, allowing students to personalize their experience. Regardless of the chosen specialization, students will be encouraged to discover and expand their ability to its full potential, and will work with faculty to reach a deeper understanding and development of their creative talents.

Communication

Students can select from three emphases as a Communication major to prepare themselves for a career marked by continuous, persistent, and frequent change: Corporate and Health Communication, Electronic Media, or Public Relations. Students are taught to be professional communicators who are ethical, responsible, talented, knowledgeable, and aware of the need to be lifelong learners. Journalism

Journalism majors at UW-Whitewater can focus their career goals by choosing from three emphases: Advertising, Broadcast/Print/Web, or International Journalism. The 21st century demands journalism professionals be skilled writers, photographers, videographers, sound technicians, editors and producers. Journalists may gather information and prepare stories that inform us about local, state, national, and international events; present differing views on current issues; or monitor the action of public officials and others who exercise power. In covering a story, they may do background research, review public records, and interview a variety of people. Reporters in radio and television broadcasting often report "live" from the scene of a newsworthy event, where they have to compose their story on the spot. Large newspapers and radio and television stations frequently assign reporters to investigate specific locations, such as police stations or courts, to gather news originating in these places. Critics review restaurant and movies as well as literature, artistic and musical works, and live performances. Editorial writers present viewpoints on topics of public interest. Advertising specialists design, develop, and market products and services in both public and private sectors.

Media Arts and Game Design (MAGD)

Students pursuing the Media Arts and Game Development major will choose from one of three emphasis areas, depending on their interests and career goals: Media Arts, Communication/Gaming, and Gaming Technology. The Media Arts emphasis develops aesthetic sensibility and artistic design skills important in the production of original, creative, digital media content for interactive and time-based computer games, animation, websites, video, special effects, 3D and motion graphic industry and artistic productions. Those pursuing the Communication/Gaming emphasis will gain practical skills in audio, video, and writing for digital media while also exploring the role games and emerging technology have in today’s culture. The Gaming Technology emphasis will develop the programming skills and software development expertise required for cross-platform, real-time interactive graphic and game development. Students will focus on a solid base of programming skills necessary to take on real-world challenges related to developing games, mobile apps, websites, and more.

Students entering any of the emphases within MUSIC are required to audition prior to admittance. These students come to the music major with experience during their high school years in ensembles and applied study. Many also enter the program with previous study in music theory. These areas will continue to be developed and expanded upon by the college curriculum:

Theatre

The theatre major offers a comprehensive program with an emphasis on practical application. Students are prepared for careers in theatre and related areas of the arts, business, humanities, and social sciences. UW-Whitewater offers three degree programs: 1) a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, 2) a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) in Theatre Education, and 3) a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre with an emphasis in Design/Technology, Performance, or Stage Management. Minors in Dance, Musical Theatre, Theatre, and Theatre Education are also available. Students are encouraged to gain experience in a variety of experiences throughout their major, such as acting, costume design, lighting, makeup, management, publicity, playwriting, and stagecraft.

Accounting

Accounts and auditors prepare, analyze, and verify financial reports. The four major fields of accounting are public, management, government accounting, and internal auditing. Public accounts may have their own business or work for accounting firms. Management accountants, also called industrial or private accounts, handle the financial reports of a company. Internal auditors verify the accuracy of their firms' financial records and check for waste and fraud. Government accountants and auditors examine the records of government agencies and audit private businesses and individuals whose dealings are subject to government regulation. Some accounts teach, work as consultants, or serve on committees of professional organizations. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting. The Master of Professional Accountancy degree satisfies the requirements of 150 units to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination.

Business Analytics

Businesses, nonprofits and government organizations are increasingly reliant on the effective use of data. The business analytics major in the UW-Whitewater College of Business and Economics is an applied program that enables students to solve business problems with data. With a deep understanding of analytics and the broad business foundation of a BBA, graduates will be prepared to interpret data-driven insights in business settings and communicate recommendations to the business community.

The multidisciplinary program includes courses in information technology, economics, math and marketing. More specifically, the curriculum covers topics such as the role data plays in decision-making, processes and limitations of working with data, interpretation and communication of findings, and use of visualization tools. Along with learning how to work with data, students examine the ethical handling of business data and decision-making. They also develop skills through internships, as well as working on business problems with community partners.

The department primarily helps students in one of the following four areas: First to develop the knowledge and skills to generate new ventures and determine the associated variability, second to refine the ability to develop innovative solutions within existing organizations, third to develop knowledge and skills surrounding driving social change within current organizations and develop social change related ventures and lastly develop the knowledge and skills to help grow small and family businesses. First, the ability to identify and explain issues facing small, family, and entrepreneurial business; second, to evaluate the viability of a business; and third, prepare a start-up business plan emphasizing financing, marketing, and organization. Entrepreneurial thinkers are in demand; organizations are competing globally, too!

The Environmental Safety & Health (ESH) professional is concerned with the interaction between people and the physical, chemical, biological and psychological factors which affect their safety, health and productivity. Communication Sciences and Disorders

The field of speech-language pathology and audiology trains clinicians to work in a variety of settings, including neonatal centers, schools, universities, hospitals, private practice, and rehabilitation and geriatric centers. Clinicians are specialists in human communication, its normal development, and its disorders. They are professionally trained to provide assessment and treatment and qualified to offer assistance to persons with speech, hearing, swallowing, and language impairments. Speech disorders are characterized by difficulty in producing speech sounds (articulation), maintaining speech rhythm or fluency, or controlling voice production. Language disorders may be characterized by an inability to appropriately use speech sounds, words and their meanings, and/or grammatical patterns. In order to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist or Audiologist a student must: obtain a graduate degree from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA); pass the National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (NESPA); and work under supervision, fulfilling the Clinical Fellowship (CF) requirement; and finally, obtain the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC). The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers a two-year M.S. degree, which meets all professional standards for CAA accreditation and all state licensure requirements for Speech-Language Pathology.

Elementary Education

Kinesiology

The Department of Kinesiology prepares teachers and professionals in physical education and the exercise sciences. The department houses two undergraduate major programs, one master’s program, and a Post Bachelorette in Physical Education. The programs include BSE Health, Physical Education and Adaptive PE, BS Human Performance (offered both in person and fully online) and MS Applied Kinesiology. The department also houses several minors and certificates.

The faculty and academic staff in the Kinesiology Department are dedicated to providing high quality education for students committed to professional careers in the exercise sciences, health and physical education, health promotion, sport and recreation management, strength and conditioning, and coaching, among other health and human performance careers.

The Special Education Department prepares professionals to work with persons with disabilities from birth to post-secondary age levels. Teaching is a professionally challenging and rewarding experience and is even more so as a Special Education teacher. The training program teaches individualized instructional techniques and learning strategies for working with all students' learning regardless of the severity of the disability. Special Education majors can become teachers at the preschool, elementary, middle, secondary or post-secondary education levels in varying school settings, residential settings or agencies serving individuals with disabilities. Our students are successfully employed as teachers by school districts throughout Wisconsin and nationwide; many return to pursue advanced degrees as well.

Biology

Biological scientists study all aspects of the structure and function of living organisms and the relationship of animals and plants to each other and to their environment. Although many specialize in some area, such as microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms), all have in common the study of life. Many biological scientists are involved in research and development. Others, in applied research, use this knowledge in activities such as developing new medicines, increasing crop yields, and improving the environment. Chemistry

Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, properties, and changes of the substances of nature, including the familiar solids, liquids, and gases of the physical world as well as the less familiar components of all living systems. Chemists research and put to practical use knowledge about all of these substances. Their research has resulted in a tremendous variety of synthetic materials, such as nylon and polyester fabrics, and processes which help save energy and reduce pollution. Research on the chemistry of living things provides the basis for advances in medicine, agriculture, and other areas. The four basic areas of chemistry are organic, inorganic, analytic, and physical. Chemists often specialize in one of these sub-fields. Over 60% of all chemists work in research and development, and about 10% work as marketing or sales representatives, where they sell and provide technical information on chemical products. Chemistry is playing an increasing role in technological advances such as fiber optics and electricity conducing polymers.

Cyber Security

The Cybersecurity major educates future Cybersecurity professionals to identify, prevent, detect and respond to security attacks that endanger the safety of property and people. Students in the program will learn to design and implement actionable security solutions by considering both human and technical factors. The practice-oriented learning environment will help prepare students to obtain positions such as security analyst, security consultant, vulnerability tester, security engineer, or security manager. Out of the classroom, students are able to participate in extra-curricular activities that include cybersecurity competitions, software development projects, and undergraduate research. The major collaborates with the Cybersecurity Center for Business at UW-Whitewater. Employment of information security analysts (Cybersecurity) is projected to grow 32 percent from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations (source: Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Environmental Science

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary program that teaches students to understand contemporary environmental problems and recognize potential solutions in a holistic way through broad training in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students select a specialty area and take a majority of courses from one of three emphases - Natural Sciences, Geosciences, or Environmental Resource Management. The Natural Sciences (BS) emphasis focuses on biology and chemistry. The Geosciences (BS) emphasis focuses on geography, geology, and geographic information systems (GIS). The Environmental Resource Management (BS) emphasis focuses on environmental ethics, sustainable development and policy issues. Students are also required to select a technical specialty that will provide them with at least one specialized skill area that is crucial for today's environmental scientists. The interdisciplinary nature of this major is also emphasized within a common core of required courses, including introductory and capstone courses that are team-taught by faculty from a wide range of disciplines represented in the major. Students are able through a capstone experience to work with a team to solve a real environmental problem in the region. Environmental Science majors benefit from UW-Whitewater's innovative water programs and partnership with the Milwaukee Water Council.

International Studies

There are career opportunities for graduates with International Studies degrees in a wide range of fields. The traditional career choices for International Studies majors were jobs in international organizations, such as the United Nations, and U.S. government jobs, including the US Foreign Service, and positions in the international divisions of many other departments, including Treasury, Commerce, and Agriculture. Non-governmental organizations, such as the International Red Cross, Amnesty International, and Greenpeace were other options, as were research positions in interest groups dealing with international issues and think-tanks in major cities. And, international business majors have been recruiters, although many employees had to spend a period of time at corporate headquarters in training and entry-level jobs before being posted overseas.
Globalization has greatly expanded the range of careers for which International Studies graduates are trained. For example, human resource departments in large institutions in major cities can benefit from the communication skills and appreciation for different world views that International Studies majors develop through their courses. Many businesses that do not have operations overseas have international business activities. While an International Studies education does not fully prepare majors and minors to manage these activities, their foreign language and other communication skills, and knowledge about international issues are valuable assets to employers. Japanese Studies

The Japanese Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program that provides students an opportunity to develop proficiency in Japanese language and a broad understanding of Japan – the world’s third largest economy and an important partner of the United States. We offer six levels of Japanese language courses, as well as courses on Japanese history, politics, culture, literature, religion, society, geography, and gender and family relations. Students also have the opportunity to travel to Japan for an internship, travel study, or study abroad program.

Students will be prepared for the global economy by acquiring proficiency in the Japanese language – one of the most used languages on the Internet – and developing cultural fluency and global, comparative perspectives.

Mathematics
