The graduate certificate in Educator to school counselor is a blended-format program designed for individuals who have already earned a master’s degree and are seeking to obtain their School Counseling (7054) license in Wisconsin. The 25-credit program begins each summer and can be completed in as little as one year (or up to 3 years). Additional courses may be required for non-teachers.
The curriculum equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to make a lasting impact on the lives of K-12 students — academically, personally, socially and emotionally. The program is designed using a cohort model to facilitate learning within relationships and collaboration with colleagues., The program is primarily online and asynchronous outside of the in-person, five-day summer session (June 16-20, 2025) and an in-person meeting over one weekend in January at UW-Whitewater. Additionally, students experience a weekly synchronous class while they engage in their K-12 school counseling internship. (Note — students who are currently employed at a PK-12 school can complete their internship experience in that district, if it meets internship requirements.)
Applications for the 2025-26 school year (June 2025 start) closed on Feb. 28, 2025. Admissions for the next summer’s cohort are rolling and reviewed monthly until the program is filled. Priority will be given to those employed full time in a K-12 setting who wish to work full- or part-time in schools while completing coursework and have a background in education or a counseling-related field (e.g., social work, advising, psychology). Please note: financial aid is not available for certificate program.
